Thanks Greg I hope your recovery is going well. I will forever be chasing you on mileage -first thing i thought of when I turned 90K! I also have a Tourance on the VStrom - been using that model tire for 9 years and have really liked the handling in wet/dry conditions. For bigger bikes I think it works well.

Ok so I definitely cheated last night on balancing my rear tire....MikeR stepped in to help with this

The good news - I had got the tire on myself successfully and the bead had seated ok. The bad news...my 45 year old rim was not perfectly round...however we had Mikes electronic balancer to help and Mikes years and years of experience.

Thanks Jerry.....bought when I had my bike shop in the 90's. Newer machines just clamp the OD of the tire......much easier then the arms. Got a manual Coates tire changer too.

Thanks, I am getting around pretty good. Got back last night from a 2000 mile trip on the GS. Tire made it, but it's down to the wear bars. I settled on the Tourance after trying several others. It is a good compromise for my use, very good on pavement, and decent on gravel and dirt.

That's the ideal! But as you know as well as anyone, it can be a long way on the straight and level to get to the twisties out here.

It’s been a few years since the front wheel axle was removed. Any tips for breaking it free?

I think last time I broke one of those loose I just used a long screwdriver through the axle and a box end wrench with a cheater pipe on the nut. I held the screwdriver in my left hand while pushing down on the wrench with my right. I had a helper tap the wrench lightly with a hammer, it didn't take long but broke free with a sharp sound.

Good to know Alan thank you. I was using a socket extender for the left hand hole side but a screwdriver makes more sense. I was surprised the bikes tool kit socket pole didnt fit in that hole.

Impact wrench is a good tool.
I bought a cheap electrical one ($50-60US) for car wheels to remove the Alternator bolt that sat hard. Blue Loctite helped it to sit.

The hammering wrench won after 20 sec

Crank on the floor, wooden plank with one person standing on it.
Correct socket followed the tool.

No impact..
Get a piece of pipe to slip over the end of a 1/2" drive ratchet to make it a long cheater bar. Leverage makes the difference.

I just read through all 9 pages this morning...a good read and great travels. Having grown up in southern NH and outside Bangor as well as riding all around the New England from the 1970s to the present, and being stuck in San Diego where I normally just winter, I'm still trying to get back for a fall ride on my 75 that is still in storage back there from the winter's nap. I did get a 200 mile ride up to Lincoln on it last October before prepping it for it's nap. I ride the goldwing out here because of my bad back telling me after that 200 mile ride it wouldn't take the hammering of my 5,000 mile ride to San Diego.... Might be back until next spring though the way things have been going..... I miss my 750.....
But I have been working on a 74 out here off and on since January to bring it back to life for a friend. Stripped it down to paint the frame and motor and clean up the wiring. Anxious to get it back on the road for him. It was his father in law's and it got parked 33 years ago in a shed shared with rats. It's cleaning up fairly well. Frame and engine are painted, engine covers are polished and awaiting new seals and new pucks under the cam towers. The tank and side covers have cleaned up fairly well, he wants to use them for now to show his father in law it brought back to life as it was 33 years ago. Later he wants to get another tank and side covers to original and save the 70s desert scene for display(it has some flaking at the filler cap.
Anyhow hope to catch up and get some riding in with you when I get back....

BTW I didn't realize the 77/78 tank was larger capacity. Always need more gas to go further....

Mike was right! Sprayed this on left it overnight then used a large wrench and screwdriver and hey presto it came off relatively easy without giving myself a hernia (again).

Now to balance and install.

Been through this before but forgot how I solved it $:-\$
All other lights work (headlight/tail, blinkers, rear brake light) - problem is the front brake light - not working. Checked the wiring in headlight and I thought it was green/white and a black wire for front brake light - and checked the wiring diagram to confirm- however no success. Anyone got better ideas?

Hi Andy. I would start with the hydraulic pressure switch: there should be 12V on the black wire with the key on, and 12V on the grn/wht terminal with the brake lever pulled. If no, the switch is faulty. If yes, then the grn/wht wire has an open connection somewhere between the switch and the main harness.
You might consider removing the headlight and tail-light fuses, as well as setting the run switch to off, so as to reduce the drain on the battery while troubleshooting.

It could also just be a loose wire at the brake switch.

Ok found the problem and I’ll be first to say I wasn’t thinking clearly yesterday as I was in the headlight bucket looking for connectors when I should have thought how the front brake switch was working - anyway it was a loose/poor connection with the black wire at the front brake switch. In my defense it’s been a long time since I worked on the K4 as everything’s worked for so long!

Thanks Stu and Scotty for the input and making me think more clearly!

Now onto the K2 with the newly installed wire harness and why it’s not starting 😎
