Stupid Stator question
« on: April 13, 2008, 12:22:07 PM »
OK,  I first want to say that I bought this bike in parts and I have never owned a SOHC before.

I put the stator assembly together and it seems fine, but when i was trying to crank the bike over it started to grind.  Then it occured to me, am I supposed to lube this thing?

I took it off and was able to start the bike for a few minutes til the battery started to die.

So do I lube it? and with what?

NO, no, no.
There should be no rubbing at all,
that will cause a short in your field coil!!

try re-centering the coil, it may have been jarred
out of position.

Good to know.  I just bought another assembly and will try mounting it up since it is already assembled.

not sure about 550, but on the 400 there are hollow dowels to make sure the outer cover and the windings are central to the stator.

Well I just swapped all of the charging stuff and not it turns freely and is getting 13.4 volts at the battery when running  ;D

I had a pretty productive day.

I don't know.  I can't understand it because the bolts only go one way.  I switched it to the one I bought here and it is perfect.

The power stator is on dowels as I recall, but the field coil can shift around a fair distance on its screws and can contact the rotor. I just wrap some masking tape around the field coil poles, then install the alternator with the field coil screws loose. After tightening the coil screws and removing the tape the coil is not grinding.
