Clear coat question
« on: April 11, 2008, 06:23:56 AM »
So when I bought my cb500 a few years ago, I bought it from a guy who had done a pretty good paint job.  The one thing he neglected to tell me, however, is that he did not clear coat the tank (God knows why).  He emailed me a few weeks later with a "by the way, make sure no gas splashes on the tank while you are filling, because it will ruin the paint."  The paint job actually looks great, but under the gas cap flap, where it is usually not visible, the paint has all bubbled up from coming in contact with gas.  I asked a paint job for a bid on cost to clear coat the tank, side covers, and headlight bucket - $350.  I've never done any painting - is this something I can just do myself.  Will rattle-can clear coat look terrible, and will it even protect the paint job from gas?

Sounds like a rattle-can paint job, if gas is gonna attack the paint.  Normal automotive enamel that has hardeners added just before it gets sprayed usually won't be affected by gas.  Rattle-can clear willl probably be just as sensitive to gas as the "base coat".

Not if you use this stuff... top notch!!! And yes, it is extremely resistant to gas & chemicals.

Don't be tempted to use hardware store type clearcoat. It doesn't produce a good finish.....don't ask!

I'm going to invest in some Spraymax 2-part rattlecan from eastwood for my project bike. I hope to be able to post positive results when I'm done.

Just ordered a can - I'll let you know how it turns out.  Point well taken on testing it on the undertank first.
