Progressive fork springs - Spacers?
« on: April 14, 2008, 08:58:09 AM »
I put new progressive fork springs in my K5 750. They were the right springs for the bike. I did not use any spacers with the springs. I still get some nose dive when I brake. Do y'all use any spacers? if so, how long? Should there always be some give on the front end when you stop or should I aim for more stability?

The bike rides fine - nice and steady.

That's the natural order of things. You brake, weight moves forward, forks compress.
Progressive springs compress at a different rate the more they are compressed. you'll notice the most difference while riding in twisties.
No.

Patrick,

I used PVC inserts with my progressive springs - no complaints and no diving...nice and firm  ;)

How long are your PVC spacers, Andy?  What do you weigh, and what weight fork oil are you running?  And did you check and adjust your front end sag?  Sorry for all the questions.  Thanks.  RR

About 1/2 inch thick for spacers. I weigh 195lbs (6`4 tall) using medium weight fork oil (Ill need to check on the brand when I get home but its fork oil. Didnt check front end sag.  I basically got progressive springs, inserted spacers, new fork oil and used this set up for a long distance trip (Mexico trip) over all kinds of terrain and mountain roads. Reason I did this is I knew there were a lot of uneven roads in Mexico and lots of speedbumps and figured this would be best for that kind of riding. It worked for me for this trip and also for a subsequent Alps trip. Ive since replaced fork oil and spacers but planning on re-installing in the coming weeks.

hope this helps,
cheers

I have 1/2" spacers just like Andy. I didn't like the thought of PVC pipe crumbling inside my forks so I tossed the spacers that came with the springs and used two large metal nuts and washers of equal size in each fork.
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

Thanks, Guys!  Only 1/2 inch spacers!  That surprises me; I though they'd be much longer.  I agree, Scondon.  I'm not a big fan of PVC spacers when it's so easy to cut some tube.  RR

Ricky its hard enough to get the 1/2 spacers in and the fork nut back on so not sure you could get much longer. Anyway as a test piece the PVC insert I used was unscathed  after 30,000 miles with no bits falling off  ;).

Thanks, Patrick.  Good input.  BTW, has anyone made adjustable preload fork caps for the CB750's?  I know Yamaha used them on the top of some XS-650 forks...  Might be a cool and doable addition to our SOHC's.  RR

I have, but that was before my digital era, so no pic's. Have not been able to reproduce them but will in the near future.

Right on, Kevin!  Glad I asked.  Please let us know when they're available.  How about a "deal" for the ol' SOHC'ers?    ::)   RR

Adjustable load fork caps? That would be my answer...

Thanks for the input, guys. I'll try 1/2 spacers, Andy. I don't want my bike to ride like a truck, but I expected a bit more firmness when I bought the springs.

I plan to have them finished around the end of the month. I will have 50 sets for this first run.
Ricky, I'm sure I can do a deal for the forum members if they want a set.
What I normally do on the finish is anodise all the main caps bright silver and them have an option for the center adjuster colour. choose from Silver,Black,Gold,Red,Blue
Or the complete cap and adjuster in a polished finish.

Can anyone tell me the length of the stock springs that were removed from their forks?  I think the springs in my K1 have been changed to lower the bike as the front end is lower than stock.  I want to get Progressive springs for mine too.  What is the outside diameter of the 1/2" spacers you all are using?  Thanks in advance guys.
