problem with slider on cb650c
« on: April 13, 2008, 07:12:37 PM »
i guess this is my intro into the forum and im not sure if its a good one.

i have a cb650c and which idles with the choke on but when you take the choke off or hit the gas a little, it bogs down and cuts out.

i initially thought this was a carb issue that they were just gummed up but after cleaning them out.... it does the same thing.  then i realized that the slider was not opening when i twist the throttle.  However, it opens when i do it manually with my finger.  all 4 sliders open.  is this an issue with the throttle or the carb?

any input is appreciated thanks.

thanks... its a 1983, and it supposedly ran correctly 2 years ago, the guy didnt do anything with the carbs as it just sat up until yesterday when i picked it up.

i soaked the bowls for a little while, sprayed them out and sprayed the main jet as well as the bottom of the carb.

I think you have CV carbs, they do not move mechanically...

Welcome  :)

If you twist the throttle and you can detect no movement at the carb end of the pull cable, then it's broken.

Are there two cables coming from the throttle control?  Maybe it missing the pull cable and just has the push??

Cheers...Joe

Right, in CV carbs, the throttle cables control a set of butterfly valves, just like in an automotive carburetor.  The throttle slides and needle jets are driven via vacuum pressure.  That's the whole idea behind CV carbs, they automatically set themselves to the correct needle jet position based on engine load and RPM.

In other words, bissinger, what you're seeing with the sliders is normal.  A big issue with CV carbs is air leaks.  They really dislike any kind of leak either in the manifold connections or in the airbox tubes.  Also, the main and slow jets really should be removed and cleaned.  They need to be surgically clean for proper performance.

Probably a silly question but have you replaced the air filter?  A clogged filter can make CV carbs, or any carb for that matter, run poorly.

good luck!
