dual brakes cb750 vs gl1000?
« on: April 09, 2008, 01:31:37 AM »
Probably a stupid question but is there anyone who has experience in the difference between a gl1000 brake setup and the 2 original discs and caliper of a cb750? Both with SS brake lines and a correct master pump.

Been a long while since I rode a dual K brake setup but I used my GL setup yesterday . . .Both stop dramatically better than a stock single caliper /rotor.  GL brakes will stop you better though.  Better control and feel.  The K setup has a good deal more "slop" built into the system with the brake arm pivot points, long lever arm and less robust caliper casting.  Combine this slop x 2 and the feel and control suffer.
Other things to think about:
The GL setup self adjusts for pad wear.
They are both heavier than hell but I think think the GL stuff is a bit lighter (no pivot arm, slightly smaller diameter disc)
GL setup gives you larger diameter, stiffer (flex wise) forks.  These forks are heavier too, no doubt
Probably less work and less money to install dual K discs
Either way its nice to use the GL's lighter weight alloy rim intsead of the stockers chrome steel one.  This will help offset the weight gains some.
Neither of these setups perform like lightweight modern sportbike brakes.

If you mean the original twin disks ala F model 750.....

Thier the same calipers....750 stops better its lighter and has less fork dive
Stranger in a strange land

I'm finishing a cb450 with GL brakes but on my cb750K2 i want to keep the top bridge for the correct mounting of gauges.
But safety goes first and with the heavy traffic nowadays...
Would it be possible to modify the top bridge to accept GL forks?
I also like to keep the "boots" of the CB fork.
I probably want too much...  :-\

Modify the GL top tree / GL instrument bracket to give a "correct" mounting of the 750 guages.  . . . The GL forks tubes are spaced significantly farther apart than the 750s so there is no way you are going to be able to modify the 750s top tree bridge to accept the GLs 37mm forks and have the proper spacing to line up with the lower tree and the rest of the GL front end. Find an aftermarket set of gaiters like the ones that Cyclexchange sells.
