Adjusting the needle height on a 77 750K??
« on: April 20, 2008, 11:25:41 AM »
Well, I have my carbs squeaky clean, I have (what I hope is) an appropriate main jet, the accelerator pump works like a charm, and the only thing left to do before I sync the carbs is raise the needle jet up a notch.

There is one problem though, I have no idea how to get the throttle slide out past the linkage.  Is there some super simple way to get the needle out that I am missing, or do I really have to disassemble everything?

Basically I just need to know how to get the throttle slide and needle out of the carbs on my 77 750K?

If your 77 carb is like my 78, there is now clip adjutsment as there were in the earlier models. You can sneak the slide out of the top.

if they are like the 78 carbs you need to shim the needle. Z-1 enterprise sells the shims.

You usually raise the needle to richen the mixture. The 77-78s have a true mixture not air adjustment so it is many times not necessary. Try adjusting the mixture screws and when you synch they may be perfect.

The 77 carbs have main jet needles with multiple clip positions.  You will need to remove the slide to get to the needle.  Needle position dominates mixture at a larger throttle opening than the pilot circuit so there are situations where adjusting the needle clip position is necessary.

This was my other question, does the mixture screw on the 77's control air or fuel?  In essence, when you screw it in, is the carb getting leaner or richer?
Ah, A trick question.  The screw adjusts both, actually.  Screwing in makes it leaner, out for richer.  But, it has a very limited range and is effective and really only effective for idle to 1/8 throttle setting.

Is there any way to get the slide out without disassembling the whole rack of carbs?
The carbs have to be removed from the bike but the rack does not have to be disassembled.  Take off the caps, undo the screws that tie the slide arms to the throttle tube.  Remove the C clips from the slide arm and slip it off.  Don't loose the plastic spacer washer(s).  Slide will lift out to be worked on.  Be extra careful not to roach out the phillips screw head that holds the horseshoe shaped bracket to the slide.  One tip is to take some soft wood like pine and drill a hole   for the slide needle to fit through. Now you can set your slide needle side down on the wood and push firmly as you undo those screws.  Make a note of the orientation of the the horseshoe bracket as it can go two different ways.  Good luck!

What you say doesn't make sense.  If it is in the range of the first 1/8 of throttle action that things are lean then you won't fix this by changing the main jet needle clip postion.  As TT said it is the IMS screw that you would adjust??  No need to pull the carbs to do this. . .Unless you didn't get your pilot jets clean . . .
