this thread makes me want to start a "will a 750 motor fit in a 550 frame??" thread.
Only if you put enough oil on it... ;D My question is, what tires do I put on my 550 with the 750 motor in it?

Well its only taken ya 4 yrs of working on it and watching the forum?

Watch closely...oil threads are like asking the Catholic church thier opinion on martin luther.....

If your an engineer heres my advice.......

Believe about half the things on the internet...after you verify them.

Then read your owners manual and figure out what oil it recommends....

Then use google or some other search engine and see what the equivelent is....

After you know what the properties are of the oil you SHOULD have...then decide what is best for you.

Yup, only 4 years..not bad eh?
I don't even believe half of the stuff I read on internet.

don't be such an a$$hole eldar.

kay- who exactly has disrespected you?- wasnt your question technically an attempt to hijack the thread?

and anyone who has been offended- don;t worry trust falls and group hugs happen at page ten of the typical oil thread, just hang on till then.

I'm so sorry, I thought this was the technical forum. Next time I'll try misc.

can I just balance things a little and recommend 'Castrol Tection Extra' another diesel oil, recommended and used by a Castrol Technical Manager in a K6 750. He told me it contains Zinc which the top end of these engines needs, zinc is not used in modern petrol oils because of catalytic convertors, a point also made by BobbyR. Castrol GTX High Mileage is good too, the 'High Mileage' refers to use in older engines not worn engines, remember GTX was the engine of choice back in the 70's when these bikes were new.

Just my 2 cents  ;D

I find it hard to believe that in the 29 or so hours this thread has existed, I missed it.  So, here's my opinion.

Someone on the first page stated to stay away from molybdenum.  I have used Honda HP4 w/ Moly for years and have the smoothest transmission in any vehicle I've ever owned.  And I've never had to replace a clutch.  When it first came out, Honda had a list of Hondas that could use the Moly oil, and the ones that can't are ones with centrifugal clutches (scooters and mini bikes like the Z50 and Trail 70s with centrifugal clutches).

Now my favorite oil thread is this one:  http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=33334.0

Thanks everybody for the answers. I am very shocked about some of the answers but man some were very funny. And I think I will go with the Rotella. Once again thanks.

No, I'm sorry.  tht was awfully crude of me. It just came a bubblin out.  I hope I didn't get you all texas tee'd off at me.  What I meant was that your new specific question about your particular situation was not the original post- it was a secondary question from another poster(you): a hijack.  even (especially) on the technical board.  I didn't think i would have to explain that to someone of your stature, but clearly it was so opaque it was required.  I over looked it because i just assume everyone looks at my posts like i do: black gold.

Based on my two short years of experience... I haven't had any problems running Rotella 5-50 (er, or whatever the hell it is- thanks Tower) synthetic during the summer.  Temps often in the 90s with commuting traffic.

It appears the stuff is gold-  I've seen in recommended for use in Subaru WRXs as well for many of the same reasons mentioned here.

But then, I won't be able to give a definitive answer for another 10 or 15 years.

This Canuck needs a recap:
    1. Manuel says 10w30 (and we know how reliable he is)
    2. Many posters just laugh and shrug or open a bag of popcorn
    3. Rotell 10w40 pops its ugly head up, placing the fear of moly into our clutches
    4. Announcing (renouncing?) Rotell T a.k.a. 15w40 and the synthtic debate is on
    5. The fear of synthetic shrinkage is put into our gaskets (and perhaps other body parts)
    6. ..and temperature perhaps turning us to Royal Purple?
    7. Zinc phosphate? Oh, can you spell "additives" (makes sign of the cross)
    8. Oh, oh Canada and back to temperature (of  course) and Rotell 5w30
    9. The fear of (not just any) experts, but "greatest" experts, attacks our upside (there's even a mention of downside)
    10. In come the expert(s) ...er... Engineers...and it gets ugly
    11. Expert speak, apologies..yadda yadda yadda
    12. ...but Rotella 15/40?
    13. ...Canada again
    14.  Well, since we're talking about Canada again, the talented (and handsome) Tower reiterates with Amsoil Synthetic 10w40 Motorcycle oil
    15. Religeous beliefs are drowned in a vat of oil(s)
    16. Jokularity galore..peanuts anyone..that popcorn must be running out
    17. A 2 penny balance is achieved with Castrol Tection Extra, zinc, and diesel.  But GTX?
    18. The fear of moly...no wait...the unfear of moly relieves our clutches
    19. Everyone is Texas sorry, or not.
    20. Just could't let it go at that and had to introduce yet another type of Rotella, but this time its gold: 5-50 (Flexible stuff that Rotella - could be the start of a legend)

Well, there you have it.  Not that its over yet...just...well...never mind.

Next silly question......

How much difference can there really be between Rotella and Castrol diesel and Chevron Delo and Valvoline Wonder Blue or whatever?... in their intended application the engines clatter and stink all the same..... for a sh!tload of miles....

Next silly question......

Why did all the engines that I blithely dumped GTX into over a period of decades mysteriously not grenade?....

Am I being too bold, lordmoonpie, to assume you are unsure of which oil to use on that "t'mah-to" as the reason for your post in this thread?  Might I suggest Italian olive oil?

YOUR language - ah yes, only your language could have given the world such superlative quotes as:

"We are invading Iraq because you have been refuserising to get rid of your penguins of mass disruption"!

And we let you win - how can you associate with a fellow who doesn't like a good cup of tea in the afternoon?!  ;D

Ah yes good point Tower - best to use light Olive Oil I think - it tends to smoke less on the over-run than extra-virgin.
