78' 550K stator
« on: April 15, 2008, 08:09:24 PM »
Hello, hopefully simple question:

I'm helping my friend Ryan (R550 here) fix his charging system on his 78' 550K.  I found that the rectifier is definitely bad, and I suggested a newer style voltage regulator but here's my question:  The stator resistance is 1.1 ohms and as far as I can tell it's supposed to be .35 ohms +/- 10%.  Should we even worry about that or is it possible the stator is also bad?  P.S. I checked the resistance all ways and it's always the same.

Anything is possible, but do remember to zero your meter for low readings AND in 30 yrs i NEVER seen a stator go electrically bad unless physically damaged!

What does your meter read when you simply touch the probe tips together?

Thanks for the replies.  I'm been at this long enough to know about checking the resistance of my meter, which is a high quality unit.  So the 1.1ohms is actual.  Additionally the field coil was right in spec.  I'm thinking of just running it but I thought I'd check with you guys... I have replaced a defective stator on a CX500 before, and that thing tested good but didn't charge.
