ND Points, Do not buy anything else!
« on: December 12, 2006, 09:17:53 AM »
I know this has been a fairly common theme among this forum, but if you are doing any ignition work and need points, go to great lenghths to find the OEM ND points.  I have e-bayed others for other projects and they are absolute junk.  The Denso points rotate on a  percise copper bushed bearing and there is absolutley no play in the point relative to its mounting post other than the required pivoting movment.  The spare set I have are not ND points and the pivot bearing is plastic with a laughable amount of slop, as if the bearing bore is too big for its pivot post.  I just called Honda and got a L/R set for my 350F for 18$ a piece...worth it in the long run...anyone want a crappy set as a spare...I'll let them go for cheap!!

Yes, I've noticed that too and to make matters worse, after going through all the trouble of setting the dwell on the cheap-o points, they seem to drift all over the place.  Very difficult to get the dwell set properly, and it doesn't hold.  Also, the point faces on the cheap ones are not parallel, and don't mate so the wear is quick.
Spend the money like wardmoto says, and get the ND's.

Apparently, Honda used two brands of points: TEC (Toyo Electrical Co.) and ND (Nippon Denso).  From what I've read, not only is the quality of the points different; so is the quality of the base plates.  I've still got the original TEC plate, but I couldn't find genuine OEM points when I needed them recently.

Thanks!  I may do that.  The TEC and ND are manufactured to an entirely different standard, according to everything I've heard.

Try the dealer.  That's where I go for points, even after finding them cheaper on the web, you don't know what you'll end up with.

I have not seen any genuine ND points for the Honda fours - only twins. The OEM points that I have are all TEC brand.

I will add this WARNING: BEWARE of the blue box 'Tune Up Kit For Honda' packaged by 'Nippondenso of Los Angeles'... these are sold with ND plugs and DAICHI points!

Happy trails.
