I've always wondered what it takes to demo-ride a dealership bike...  I've never done it myself, but I'm sure it would be fun.

I've heard Buells are pretty fun little bikes (even if they do look like toads  ;D)

the one and only demo ride i've ever gone on was in 97... on a buell lightning something.  beautiful pearl white paint.
i think that it may have been eric buell that was on a tricked out yellow w/ purple liquid splash effect painted torque monster!
all i remember is following along then out of nowhere the guy wheelies off and up around one of the off ramps that curves back up and goes over the road.
the cool factor was definitely there.
i got a hat that said buell, was later autographed by kyle petty when i rode with them for a while on one of his rides... then was stolen.
hmmm... maybe i should've ended that story sooner.    :D

I have never had a dealer offer demo rides which I thought was odd. Maybe things are changing. Harley is in real trouble and who knows about the 'metric" bikes.

My brother just bought a new Harley.  He test rode a few bikes before he bought. a sportster, street bob (got this one, I like it a lot!!!), and a triumph america.  Nobody blinked about a test ride.   I was at a Suzuki dealer yesterday on business and they were trying to talk me into test riding a new SV1000S (I wanted to but then I would be sad that I can't buy it right now :'( ).  I think most dealers will let you ride as long as you are licensed.

That is good, the dealers around here don't do test rides. I told one guy, you must be kidding you want me to spend $10K on just a walk around and your good word. I think not.

Our local Victory/Suzuki dealer will ask you only in the Spring the minute you walk in the door. But then in the Fall, the response is, "No way man". Guess what, they are still sitting on "new" 2006 inventory!!!

At our local Honda dealer you have to ask and ask, and then they will say the person that gives demo ride permission is out to lunch... I would love his job.

And finally our local Harley/Buell dealer requires an attitude check at the door, a full economic "status" review (not if you have the money, but how you got it. This is reserved for Lawyers and Doctors), blood test to verify genetics, and you must be wearing the latest $800 limited edition Harley leather jacket for them to even consider... Other words, a cold day in hell. Wait a minute, I live in South Dakota and that happens at lease once a year!!!??? Sorry no, I am not a member of the local law or medical social clubs, or a card holding member of our local Outlaws motorcycle gang... Maybe someday when I grow up...  :D

we're not talking about test rides... demo rides.

demo rides are when the trailer of demo bikes comes to your town and you get to select the bike you want to ride.  usually they send you an invitation.  sometimes a dealer will have their own demo bikes but VERY rarely.  new bikes aren't supposed to have miles on them.   ;)

test rides are available from most dealers if you qualify to actually purchase the bike (meaning they'll want to check your credit) and you have a motorcycle license.  sometimes, smaller shops are more willing to simply accept the motorcycle endorsement and others want the endorsement and i've had some ask how long i'd been riding before they let me on any new stuff.

Hey Scott-
You should maybe think of growing up sooner than later. Your Harley schtick is nothing new, and though there are exceptions, most aren't like that. Have you gone to an actual Harley dealership? Or do you just repeat what the latest editorials say and take it as gospel?
Do us all a favor and step down from your soapbox. No one's interested in your ignorance.

Fonz,

I am sorry if I stepped on your wicket. And yes I have been to my local Harley Dealer... J & L Harley is the name of the dealer and they cop a serious attitude, kind of like yours... Maybe I was suggesting that "others" should grow up.

Since you don't know me, and there are few here on the forum that do, I will say I will ride with any motorcycle that is on the road and driven with a good safe attitude. But most of the local Harley guys will not do the same with me, because I ride a Cafe CB750F3... Or for that matter anything else besides a Harley. I should clarify, I do not have a thing against a Harley. I think they are fairly well design and manufactured motorcycles. Just the attitude is what I am talking about.

My wicket's just fine, thanks.
I rode the same 750K4 that I'm rebuilding now when I started here, and there's no one here that has anything against them. I parked it out front for the months that I rode it everyday, and no one had anything bad to say.
Take the ride out from South Dakota; I'll take you on a Buell demo ride myself.

In this case its not a typical demo day type of ride where the "vendor" van shows up and you ride what they have. You can actually got to any buell dealer listed, test ride a bike and get what they offer at the moment.

Buell tends to have one of these every quarter.. Up to the april 15th it was some neck thing to keep your neck warm.

I have a 06 lightning and I things a great bike. I cannot play w/ the liter bikes and what not but I didnt get it for that reason. I wanted something that was joy to ride on the street, ridable to work every day in rush hour traffic, and something that just looked the part. The lighting fits ever bit of that.... its short, ton of torque, killer riding position got easy to maintance.

Theres only two kinds of harley shops and riders....Boutique and motorcylists.

I hate my local Harley dealership. I wouldn't buy a motorcycle there if they were the last dealership on the planet.
