need help mounting new tank and seat
« on: April 17, 2008, 05:37:15 PM »
hi guys, just got my new tank and seat.

here they are just resting on the frame:

so i need a little guidance on getting these on there. the tank needs those ears that go on the front. since the tank is fiberglass there will be no welding. there are some screws inside the tank tho. take a look:

so im guessing ill need to cut those "ear" pieces off the old tank and screw them onto the tank with those screws?

as far as the seat goes i dont really know what to do. any ideas? i will be cutting about 3 or 4 inches off the length of the seat but i dont think that changes anything.

Hi,
is this a Dunstall style tank from Carpy?

Did you not find the answer there?

What's the problem with the seat, exactly?

Good luck.

Yeah that's a bit weird, that replica tank is meant for a CB750, yeah? It doesn't seem to sit well on the frame either, but that's probably just because of the ears.

I'm guessing that the seller/maker is expecting you to cut your OEM tank up for the "Ears", which sucks a bit, I reckon? Cheers, Terry. ;D

i think i am ok with the tank. just need to cut up the old one and get the ears off it.

with the seat i am pretty lost. most guys dont use the stock hinges do they? so should i just hack those things off?

so any help getting the seat on there would be helpful. i have never done this before.

and the tank isnt sitting level on the frame since the front is unsupported and sagging so its listing the back of the tank.

What's your OEM tank like mate? it seems a shame to chop up a good one, just for the ears?

I can't help you with the seat, I've never used one, but I think chopping the hinges off and screwing the base to the frame seems to be common. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Hi Stert,

No need to cut up a good tank, can't you replicate the ears on a small plate where you drill 2 holes in to mount on to the tank, that's where these 2 screws/bolts are for. Or you can choose to mount a piece of steel 30x6(mm) on to your framerails with 2 silent blocks and let the tank sit on that. No need to weld, just use 2 U-bolts. Hope it's understandable, my english is not that great.

Cheers, Rob
Better sorry for failing then for the lack of trying.

my stock tank seems to be in pretty good condition. it was painted black by the po so i dont know if there is any bondo work to it or what. but it seems solid. i dont really have a use for the tank after this so i might as well cut it up  :o

as for the seat. i think the stock hinges will be coming off and the seat will get bolted to the frame. it seems to me, and i could be wrong about this, that if i were to use the hinges the seat would sit up a little too high off the frame for my liking.

I have a junk tank sitting in my garage that I was going to throw away.  If you would like the wings I can cut them up and send them to you.

Let me know.

That's the way to go mate, don't destroy a good tank, Honda aren't making any more of them! ;D

Go to the hardware store and look at closte rod holders or shower curtain rod holders, the cheap style. They have a full round socket, and a U shaped one. You'll need to buy two sets or cut the the full round socket one to make another U.  Most are about the same size as the stock tank ears.

Quick search found these so you know what I mean:

three or four pics on that page. Cheap easy, no cutting of a tank
