cb900f shocks!
« on: April 18, 2008, 01:03:11 PM »
hey guys, i am now the new owner of a pair of cb900f rear shocks!  i just ordered them off of ebay, and the picture has them looking about like they should given their age.  a couple of questions.

1.  are the shocks rebuildable?  i don't think so, but it can't hurt to verify

2.  is there any way to upgrade the springs if they are too soft or hard?

3.  how can i take them apart to refinish and paint them?

if y'all could let me know, i would appreciate it!  thanks a lot guys!!!

They are not rebuildiable. You can take the springs off however to repaint the shock itself as I have done this myself to the same things. You can either buy a spring compressor or make one yourself that cheaper and easy to use. I made one with a 1/4 plate and two pcs. of 3/8-16 threaded rod and nuts.

I hope you didn't pay too much for them - as much as they are an upgrade over stock SOHC4 shocks they are still 27-something year old oem shocks. A brand new pair of shocks will still run rings around them.

Not rebuildable, but the spring can come off. Compress the spring and unscrew the top. You may want to soak them in pb blaster overnight before unscrewing.

Any new shock available for the SOHC cb750 is doing to also be available for the DOHC cb900f, and since people are snapping these babies up like crazy on ebay (and overpaying IMHO) it pays to look at new shocks.

I run vipex shocks originally ordered for my 82 900F on my '78 cb750F. there have been a lot of complaints about them being too stiff by riders weighing under 250 lbs. Since I weigh more than this they have not been a problem for me. They did a group buy for ohlins on the cb1100f.net board and a lot of guys have been putting their vipex shocks up for sale (I bought an almost new set, less than 6 months old for $200 shipped to my door). There are also people looking into getting lighter springs for them.
