Couple of questions about coils
« on: May 09, 2008, 03:34:07 PM »
Well, I thoroughly destroyed my 750K's coils trying to cut them open to get the plug wire out of them :o

Oh well, live and learn.

Anyways, I'm heading to the boneyard tomorrow, to pick up a set of coils.  I know that CB900 coils will work, as will first generation Goldwing coils.  I'm wondering what else will work on my 750?  Will 550 or 650 coils work?  How bout any other Honda coils?

Thanks.

76-78 goldwing coils work easily.
pretty much all the 750 ones will work as well.

I have some goldwing coils on mine - they work great

Mine are molded in like the 750's  I've seen some of the goldwing ones that have replaceable plug wires.
Not sure of the exact years though.  That's what I wanted to do with mine originally.

I'm assuming the F coils are the same as the K, can anyone confirm this? I'm thinking of taking the coils from my 76F and using them on my 75 or 73 K.

How come wing coils fit when they have a ballast resistor on the wing?

The stock SOHC4 coils from Honda are about 4.4 ohms primary. For best results with Dyna coils, use the same or HIGHER ohms resistance. If you go to lower ohms, you should add external resistance to make up the difference, or there will be troubles. Not always will the troubles surface immediately: some troubles will be more like a slow infection...  ::)

They interchange just fine, but the K0-K5 plug caps had resistors in them: after that, they were non-resistor caps, which then require that you use resistor sparkplugs instead.

They fit, but introduce the same electrical problems as the 3-ohm Dyna coils: they need external resistors.
(I've been helping a couple other 500/550 riders fix theirs up, lately...  :(  ).

Hell, partsnmore.com has CB900 coils for $30 a crack, I might just pick those up.

Are there any issues or things I need to know about running CB900 coils?

I'd say to just check the ohms of the primary side, first. Make sure it's 4 ohms or more, or adjust accordingly.

hondaman m not sure i understand you right.
im alittle slow with electrical stuff
i have a cb750 that i want to use a dyna 2000, bought 2.2 grey coils.  what do i need to do to make it work well?  why the difference in ohms then?  will a 2.2 3.0 or something higher do something different for a motor?  whats the reason for the choice?
