Fuuuuuuk!
« on: April 19, 2008, 07:25:43 PM »
My wife and I took a ride today (our first 2-up since college) and had a wonderful time banging around the the country roads between DC and Baltimore.  Ate dinner in s. Baltimore at the Double T diner before heading back home.  Doing 60-65 on the parkway in the dark and had to swerve to miss a body in the road.  I don't know how he got there, I just know there was this guy tumbling down the center lane.  I'm still shaking.  And it'll be a long time till I can get the image of his face out of my head.

Hell-  what do you do with that?

Tumbling like fell out of a truck at speed or pushed out of the car.  When I went around him he was easily doing 20mph.  Maybe he was crossing the freeway and got hit, but I don't think so.

(for those who might be wondering, we pulled over and called 911.  Waited there till the found out if the police wanted to talk to us.)

Eight years ago I rode past a guy on the highway that had been rear-ended by a car on his motorcycle, I saw the car first, center of the hood and motor V-eed in badly, then I saw what he had hit, a motorcycle, the rear half of the bike was wadded bad all I could see was rear tire on top of tank. Roughly 75 feet away I spotted the victim. laying face up on the side of the highway. Eight years ago and every detail of those moments are as vivid as they where back then. There is certain shade of blue in this world I never want to see again.
You're experience tonight may be with you for a long time, all I can offer is it's o.k to be freaked out, go with it for awhile.  Good luck.

That's really scary!

I almost hit a couple with a small child about ten years ago while riding my KZ550 home from work down I-35 in Austin.  They were walking across the highway (8 lanes wide with a concrete barrier in the middle and always heavy, fast-moving traffic) and had just hopped over the divider and litterally ran out in front of me like I wasn't there! :o  All I could do was swerve to the right, and I missed the guy holding his child by about two inches.  If I had hit them, there's a very good chance all three of us would have died.  His face is permanently etched in my brain.

Spill,

Thanks for the update.  I've been checking the news sites and hadn't seen anything.

I'm sure we'll be back out soon (we had a great time till the incident and she's wanting to get some leather pants for more protection).  Still just a bit freaked out, you know.

Not to make light of a horrible situation but after an experience like that I would be shopping for new pants too...because I would have soiled them for sure!

What a horrible experience that must have been. I have seen a few bodies back in the day when doing security at a Toronto Hospital but it is a little different when you are expecting it while doing a morgue run (and they are on a hospital bed and NOT in the middle of the Free-way!!)

The image will stick with you I am sure....but like everything else time will help!

It happens in Spain every now and then, people killed in a 6 or 8 lane highway.

I can talk from my experience. One day I took a lift in a classmate's car. He lived far from my home but he agreed to pull somewhere where I could get the bus -the school was 50 miles away-. So we got into downtown Madrid and he pulled so I got down in the middle of the parkway that crosses Madrid.

It took me a good 10 minutes to wait until the road was clear to cross. It was scary to say the least, so many cars screaming past you. It doesn't seem that dangerous while on the car.

Sometimes people share a car to commute and the driver pulls by the closest safe spot to pull. Then, the guy goes off and he decides that it is easier to cross the road than walking up to the next bridge or underground pass. Add nightime and difficulty to judge a car speed and you have a recipe for disaster.

does it make you feel better that the guy survived?  that you saw something horrible- but not the death of that man?

It might give you some closure and get the images out of your head if you were able to see him post recovery.  I was real close to a bad accident at work and I had bad dreams, wondering if i could have done something to prevent it, until I saw the guy who got hurt back and ok and talked to him.

Also- next time you go for a ride in my hood let me know- although i can't say I am sorry I missed this one.

Yeah, I guess I feel a bit better.  I realize that everything in this situation (besides keeping my wife and I alive) was out of my control, but knowing I didn't witness a death somehow makes it less traumatic.  It's helpful to put everything in a bit more context, instead of just being a solitary event.  I don't know-  the mind is a strange thing.

I'll definately try to catch you next time we're out that direction.

It's kind of a moot point, but how many of us are equipped with first aid knowledge? Mine came after a not as dramatic, but equally deadly surprise moment... I felt incredibly helpless and signed up for a class as soon as I found one... now I teach it.. Ironically, about 6 months after My class ended, I was riding my CB along, looked over, and there were a group around a guy on the sidewalk who had been riding his bicycle and hit a road sign, peeling open the back of his head... that day, I had no first aid kit or rubber gloves, but someone else did (now I always have one on my bike).. I was able to aid with patient assessment (pulse, checking for spinal damage etc.) so no further damage was done before the ambulance got there.. It was just like they say, instinct kicked in, and I just knew what I was doing... it was a great feeling... I would urge everyone to get some training...

I need to renew my first aid training sometime soon. But i have been trained in it for a few years now. Main reason i dont have an active certificate at the moment is because i was not able to afford to renew when the last one expired.
