Not a CB but check it out......
« on: April 19, 2008, 05:37:34 PM »
In to me for a valve adjustment (first one in 12,000 miles!!!) etc. Intake boots are total crap. Original owner...bought it as junior in High School. Original Rootbeer paint, plastic, exhaust etc. I hate taking the tanks off this stuff.....God forbid I drop it etc. ::) ::) ;) Got to love the plate. I have to say....I've never seen a better looking 4 into 4 exhaust system in my life.....and it was OEM.

Mike, that's a very nice '73 Z1 indeed. I'd guess that would bring $10~$12 easy if the seller listed it.

I love riding my '76, but it's no match for the CB750 in the "go" department. I'd say folks actually like the looks of the Honda more based on comments received while stopped at eateries and fuel.

I love the exhaust note they make, there is more grunt down low, but nothing exciting happens anywhere in the rpm range. The little Honda will start pointing stellar constellations for you :)

I think Mike needs to surprise him with a bore kit and head work. "Just did a good tune up"  ;)
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Well, I sure got a lesson today! :o I had always thought, from all the "hype", that the Z1 was top dog back then! :-\ Nothing against the 750, I just thought that the 900 would beat it. What were the things about the 900, that held it back? I would be interested to know. BTW, I've got doubt that if Gordon or Mark says it, it must be true. And Gordon saying it, with Mark backing it up,  and nobody disputing it, makes it even more solid.

Bill, your ears did not miss-lead you back then. A stock Kaw 900 would let a CB750 get into 2nd gear before launching and still take it in the quarter - or so the rumors were circulated. I think I saw that in one of the magazine articles of the time.

I'd riden my room mate's 1976 KZ900 back and forth to school almost daily of my first year in college. His had the K&N's and a Kerker 4/1. I just remember that bike being stupid fast 32 years ago. Fast forward to a few weeks ago and I rode my first one in 30 years - the one I bought off EBay. After a thorough tune-up, new stock 630 chain, sprockets, and cleaning - I rode it to the redline a few times. It made me smile - it was obvious that I'd done a fantastic job on the CB750 K4's modifications. The 900 was no match - not even close. I know the 900's can be made to make serious power, but the little 836cc CB Honda looks so tame and so meek beside the big, legendary Kaw.

Noone would suspect the little Honda to be the big bad wolf of the two.

Go little Honda, go little Honda, go...........

Gordon

Here is a pic from last week's VJMC show. A good friend of mine is about to take the KZ900 for a "first ride" - his first ever on a 900. He came back wanting one of his own. He just could not get over the smoothness. His response later that afternoon when he came back on the CB was Holy - $hit! I never, ever expected that!

A good running 836 with porting, good cam, and well tuned is the perfect sleeper. Yes, I'm a real Honda CB750 fan - these babies can bring home the bacon.

It's funny how things change. I used to view those Z1's as the enemy! Even though deep down I considered them good looking bikes they were CB eaters and that was enough to hate them and their riders.

A guy I knew had one and my 810 could stay close in acceleration, but I could eventually overtake him. It took a looong stretch of road at WFO throttle.

Now I'm a little too long of tooth to hold a grudge, that is a fine looking bike indeed, rare to find an original 73 in as good shape.

Mike....... could you not maybe leave a rag in the airbox or something!!!

That's a beautiful Z1 Mike, I had a 1975 KZ900 and it would kick most bikes off the road as you'd expect, but the original Z1 (that one) with 82 BHP and 30 pounds less weight, was the "Hayabusa" of the 1970's. Awesome! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Ah, had me worried. It's just motorcycle problems then. Nothing a bit of time, some tools, and some money won't fix then. Glad it's nothing too serious.

Unfortunately I often take motorcycle stuff too seriously. My wife gives me s..t about it all the time. She says..."If you are going to get this upset by it why do you do it?" My reply...."because I'm good at it and I can do it". End of conversation everytime but she makes a good point. ::) Thanks again Mark.

Yeah, you're good at it, so easy enough to fix when something goes wrong, eh?
I know what you mean about your work being an extension of yourself though, so if something happens to your work (even if it isn't your fault) it can be depressing and frustrating.
Good luck, I'm sure it will be fine.

Thanks Gordon, for reassuring me on that. I don't remember much on the Z1 but, I Do remember the Kawasaki Mach III article that told about taking one of those 500 triples to Lions Drag Strip in CA, uncrating it, servicing it up, checking it out and turning 12.7sec times while blowing off a Sportster. Then taking it out on the road with a new CB750 and staying ahead of it up to a certain speed and AND THEN the CB750 started taking over! 8) ;)

Hey Mike, Hope things pick up for ya there guy. I understand your feeling.
