The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
« on: April 20, 2008, 01:43:15 AM »
(Western) 1967. A brutal and brilliant western, set during the Civil War, about three disparate low-lifes searching for a cache of Confederate treasure buried in a nameless grave. Starring Clint Eastwood. Eli Wallach, Lee Van Cleef. Director, Sergio Leone.
Does it get any better than this. If so, name it!

You have to watch the the The BAD, The Bad and the Ugly in the anniversary edition on DVD. It looks great and they put it back together. Josie Wales would be a close second. They are both big epic films.

I love all of the Sergio Leone westerns, from the Clint Eastwood ones to Once Upon a Time in the West with Charles Bronsnon and James Coburn.  The best western, however, is the Wild Bunch.  End of thread.

I like westerns quite a bit and have seen many.  "The Outlaw Josie Wales" is certainly one of my favorites. And, "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" is right up there.

But, don't overlook Silverado, Quigley Down Under (certainly a western style if not a true western ), or just about any Western that was done by Tom Selleck (I.E. The Sacketts), Wyatt Earp (Kevin Costner), Tombstone (Kurt Russel).  The Magnificent Seven, 3:10 To Yuma, The Shootist, Hud.

If you also like western comedy, see Rustler's Raphsody (Tom Berringer), Frisco Kid (Wilder, Ford), Shanghai Noon, Lightnin Jack, Little Big Man.

Cheers,

........ well, gee..... If we stretch the list to include just any old westerns I'd add 'The Long Riders'(Carradines, Keach's, Quaids, Guests) .......... 'western style' add 'J.W. Coop'(Cliff Robertson) and second Quigley(dang that's a nice Sharps copy).

Western comedy - 'Blazing Saddles', of course. .....not sure where 'The Cowboy Way' fits but "questioning" Stubby was a great scene. ;D

There's some funny stuff in that for sure.  But, that movie is a little too blatant slapstick to be on my great movie list as the replay value diminishes a bit too quickly.  The Comedy Westerns I listed hold up to repeat viewing quite nicely.  Whereas, Blazing Saddles wasn't funny or of much interest after the second viewing.  But, that's just Mel Brook's style.  Most of his movie's are like that.  Kind of "throw away" humor...sort of.  If you know what I mean.

Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, The (2005)

there's a movie I just can't remember the name of, nor the actor, but it's a good one.

One of the best bronc riding scenes ever,
the fellow's been trying to ride this horse and does and then
has to shoot his old partner, and while his partner is dying
he tells him how he figured out how to ride the horse.
Help me out here fellows.
