as far as I am concerned 1% status is determined by the FBI and Local Law enforcement. If you come up on the radar of either of these organizations then you are there. Unfortunatly, in NY just having a back patch means you are a 1%er since you have to go to HA to get one and the LEOs often consider that a sign of affiliation (with certain exceptions like those clubs that have a membership in LIRA or AMA also).

the creation of the term 1% is probably one of the more intelligent marketing ploys the AMA has ever used. Think about it - if you are a club and NOT a member of the AMA then you are an outlaw, like the AMA is some sort of government organization when the reality is they are just a very large club themselves. Wanna be socially accepted? Join the AMA - can't get a much clearer message than that. It was then and is now a bunch of bull.

When I hear "Death Cats" I picture a "West Side Story"like gang, advancing up a street in a crouched position, hands outstreched, snapping fingers, all dancing in unison to a jazzy beat.
