carb. issues...what to do opinons
« on: April 22, 2008, 06:59:33 AM »
my carbs are leaking pretty bad like maybe a float is stuck open.....what process should I use I guess take them off and clean them. I have never messed with carbs so  I am looking for any input that might help me a long should I pickup carb rebuild kits which is pretty salty since we have 4 carbs or just the floats and needle kits....just looking for some expertise. any information or pictures would be great since  I am a carb problem noobie.

You could prob. start by locating which one is the bugger, and if it is a stuck float open up the bowl, have a look see, pull the float out if you can get to it, if you can't its probably good to pull all the carbs anyway and give them a good once over, get a manual read it twice and ask questions here, carbs will seem tricky untill you get the hang of it.  One other thing set the float by it self in a cup of gas and see if it floats by it self (floats can go bad), prob not the case if its a honda part they make good floats, but its still good to check yourself before you wreck yourself. :P Someone else correct me if i'm wrong or add to it. ;D

On my bike if a float is stuck open it will leak out the overflow tube of that carb. Same if it is set too high. Are you leaking out the tube or the bowl. Bowl? new bowl gaskets. I'm leaking too and will do mine this weekend (if I get parts). My 550 runs great otherwise so I am planning to inspect, clean, and install new bowl gaskets and set floats. I'm leaking from both overflow and bowl. Good luck.

so even if a float is stuck it will run ok...because mine isnt and i was hoping the problem was in the carbs.

I wouldn't go as far as saying it will run OK with a stuck float.  It will tend to load up and run rich at slower speeds and at idle on that cylinder, at higher speeds it may not be as noticeable.  High float levels richen your mixture across your throttle range.  Sometimes it is only a temporary sticking because of dirt in the float needle seat, it will some times stop if you tap the side of the float bowl.  If not, you really need to pull the float bowl and check it out.  It may just be a chunk of crud in the seat or in need of adjustment.

well my bike will barely stay running only with the choke on and it is missing like a pig I have checked everything else and I am hoping it is the carbs...there is gas in the plugs and it is fouling them out.
