Gas coming out my exhuast drain hole?????
« on: April 24, 2008, 05:21:14 PM »
So I have been having all sorts of issues with my bike between a rich mixture and poor timing/points.  But the most recent issue that I saw today is that I stopped at the auto shop to get some new plugs and shut my gas off.  When I came outside I saw some decent sized wet spots under my number one cylinder exhaust.  I smelt it and it smelt like gas and was kind of black.

I'm assuming it is black because the insides of my pipes are black from the rich mixture like my spark plugs are.  But what would cause my gas to come out of my exhaust?  My first thought is the floats.  Do I messure from the bottom of the carb(where the bowl meets) to the bottom of the float?

If your wondering about my performance on the ride home it was terrible.  I couldn't go much faster than 65 and the power all around just felt poor.  Plus I am getting terrible gas millage.  I need help any thoughts?

Did you see it dripping out of your exhaust? Your stock carb overflow tubes dump out near that location as well, so it may be coming from there...it could be your float levels, or some garbage has found its way into the carbs. Condensation does come out of those drain holes, and it can have a gas-ish smell, especially if its running rich. If it was raw fuel, it would probably wind up in the oil sooner than it would come out of the exhaust drains....
Hope this Helps!

I felt the bottom of the  exhaust and it ended up all over my fingers.  I currently don't have the overflow tubes hooked up.  I have also seen condensation come out of the drains too but this was a lot and when I got home it looked like it was all over the kick stand too.  I tried to smell my oil but by that point everything smelt like gas so I should check it out tomorrow.  What would allow the gas to get in my crankcase?

Carb overflowing (Stuck float or stuck fuel valve maybe?) into the engine because the overflow tube is blocked.

I have a rebuilt CB750 engine and brand new stock exhaust. After even a few minutes running puddles of water form under the bike from the exhaust pipes and it does end up on the stand too. I can't see that much gas getting into your pipes.

Are you sure it is really coming out of your pipes?  Or is it
coming out of the airbox and running out on the pipes.
Still, it looks like it's absolutely time to pull the carbs and clean
the float valves.  No doubt, whatsoever that your float valves
or valve, is leaking.  Pull em and fix em!
It gets a whole lot easier after the umpteenth time!! ;D ;D

Well thanks for all the input guys.  I pulled the carbs yesterday and checked the heights of the floats and made sure they were all working properly, which they were.  As far as my fuel mixture goes I think I am going to order a new air filter for the bike but I'm not sure that is gona do it.  When I took the carbs apart I took off the floats/ float valve, idle screw(on the engine side of carburetor), and that tube that goes up towards the needle.  There is one skinny brass tube that comes down and has a little hole in it that I can poke a wire through but not take off.  Should I be able to take it off?  I can post a picture this weekend if that helps describe what I'm talking about.

But since I'm almost positive that everything is stock on this bike I'm just not sure if my rich mixture is caused by something being wrong with my carbs or something else?  Air filter clogged?

How would gas make it into my crankcase?

I see some oil making it's way past a gasket on my cylinder cooling fins.  It started around cylinder one now it looks like it is moving all around.  I'm not sure if it's the head gasket but could this cause my bike to run so bad due to lack of compression?
