Help quick Por 15
« on: April 24, 2008, 08:28:10 PM »
I have heard alot about flash rust when cleaning a tank. I just got the Por 15 Kit and did the first step(Marine Clean) and the second step(Metal ready) and part of the second step was to dry the tank completely with a blow dryer or fan which I was doing. The tank started to flash rust slightly before the tank was even completely dry.

What do I do,can I use the Por 15 tank sealant on the tank if there is a little bit of flash rust?

Is the blow drying step in the POR15 instructions?  I Kremed a tank recently, which basically the same thing as POR, and at the 2nd step, which is to 'dry' the tank, you are not actually meant to make it dry, just mostly free of water.  This is done by throwing in ~250cc of MEK sloshing around and dumping out.  You should then, quickly, pour the liner in before the metal rusts.  I know it looks wet inside the tank after you dump out the MEK, but it's probably something like 70%MEK, 30%H2O.  It's not necessary to get all the water out, it should evaporate out with the MEK with is used to thin the liner.

Whether a little bit of flash rust hurts or not, I don't know, but I've read flash rusting is bad too.  My tank has only been lined for a couple months now.  Time will tell how well it stuck.  BTW, I would definitely do a double coat... I noticed a huge difference between one coat and two.  With one coat, there are parts of the liner that are so thin that it's almost transparent.  With two, it really looks robust.

It does say to make sure its completely dry ,it actually emphasizes to make sure its completely dry and says that if there is any water the Por 15 will not adhere to the metal. Also after I posted my question last night I was reading the on the Por 15 website and it says Por 15 is meant to be applied right over rust.Obviously I am trying to get the tank as rust free as possible.
About the two coats I have never heard of anybody doing that with Por 15,it seems like everyone is satisfied with one coat. I will look into it.
Thanks for the help and if any of my information is wrong, anyone should feel free to let me know.
Thanks

Kreem and POR15 are two totally different treatments, both are good, but don't confuse one with the other. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"
