Engine Rebuild Snag ('78 750F)
« on: August 16, 2005, 05:37:07 AM »
I posted a few weeks ago about trouble getting the engine out - turns out that task is much easier once you pull the oil tank and associated hoses out.

Moved on from there and it's all torn down down - and I've assessed what was wrong and what it needs.  Seems the camshaft fused to the valve towers over the 2nd and 3rd cyclinders.  I found replacements for those parts and was looking at testing the rest of the engine and replacing the things that should be before it goes back together.

Now the bike had been burning a lot of oil before it siezed up but when i took the pistons out, they didn't look too bad and the rings weren't in rough shape.  This led to thinking about where that oil was getting through - and to testing the valves and the valve guides.  Turns out the exhaust valve guides were pretty far out and will need to be replaced - that and new valve seals (and new rings on the pistons) will likely seal the engine up nicely again.  All these are stock honda parts, so things were going well thus far.

The problem is that the inlet valves where mushroomed where the valve tappets strike them and will need to be replaced - but this is a discontinued item from honda, and all the aftermarket suppliers that we came across at the honda shop had valves, but not for the '77, '78 750s.

So, I come to the SOHC forums for guidance.  What I'd like to know is if the inlet valves on a '78 750F are the same as the K or other models of that year.  I'd also like to find a source for these things, if anyone knows of one.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

seems like the same deal there, no problem for F1 models, but no dice on F2

Apart from mushrooming on the valve tips, are the valves ok? If so, just take a dremel tool with the little sanding drum and lightly grind off the mushrooming until the valve will slide in and out of the guide. F2 valves are like rocking horse manure mate, so if the valve faces are alright, just dress the tips as previously described, and replace the guides and seats, and lap the valves back into their seats, and it'll run like a new bike for another 27 years! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"
