Grateful Dead Stories
« on: April 25, 2008, 11:08:43 PM »
I saw a reference to "the band" tonight, and wondered who has seen them in concert?

My story.
When I had my 2 playground retail stores I had a couple of sales guys who did double duty as install guys ;D
These guys belonged to a band and at any one time any one of them would be around the shops. Their band was called "She Stole My Beer". A take off from a party in grade 12 when a chick stole their beer ;D

One day they asked for a few days off, I found out it was the Dead concert in Eugene OR.  I called a friend of mine and we jumped into my "Canary yellow" 1965 Ford Econline and headed South as well. Slept in the Van, or under it? Got tickets at the venue. ;)

Spent 2 glorious days in ....as I called it.....in  ..... "Wally World"......

It was an experience I will never forget.

P.S. I still say to the members of staff band when I see them that I did not take 2 :o

some editing to this complete story was done to protect any young prying eyes.

right after garcia died i walked into a head shop on ocean beach in maryland
the owner had a little set up remembering garcia and i have to admit at that time i looked alot like garcia
so i walk in and the owner goes"gerry, i thought you were dead"
i thought he was joking and so did my friend but the guy was serious
he started showing me all his memorabelia on the grateful dead and asking me to sign his stuff
the only way i got rid of him was to tell him i just wanted to lay low for a while before i started touring again
i promised him he would be the first one i would call when the dead went on tour
i wonder if he is still waitiing for that call

hartford civic center show march 19th 1990, i went on an "extraterrestrial" experience, and i did take 2. we were staying at the jp morgan hotel DIRECTLY across the street from the venue. my best friend dave and i had seperate seats so we had to make our ways seperately back to the hotel, well, i was completely twisted and wandered around the block several times trying to find our hotel. i'm just standing there laughing my ass off at one point when i hear jeff! hey jeff! from above my head and at this point i just start laughing harder. finally i realized i was directly below our hotel window and i wobbled my way inside behind a group of people into the elevator. well, these guys turned around as the got in and i just about dropped my teeth, as there was jerry, bob, brent and phil in the elevator with me. i turned to jerry and told him, you know, you look awful familiar to me and he said, funny i was thinking the same thing. i got off the elevator and dave was standing there and he just lost his mind when he saw who was in there with me. and thats my grateful dead story.

the Dead are the only band I have seen more times then The Ramones (140+ Dead shows, around 120 Ramones shows.
I am sure I should have some good stories......

damned if I could think of any I could legibly/decipherably describe.

I spent a long weekend in Autzen Stadium (Eugene) at a dead show.  At the time it was one of the last places a person could camp in the parking lot during a show.  it's hard to describe the sheer fantasticness of the scene - good or bad, it was like nothing else.

Only went to a couple of Dead shows, oddly never made it into the actual show, kept getting distracted somehow.  At Soldier Field in Chicago you can hear the show somewhat from the parking lot anyway.  This happened twice lol.

One day my brother says "Hey, want to go see the Dead this weekend?  I've got an extra ticket."

I replied "Sorry, I'd love to, but I'll be out of town.  Let's catch them next time they're in Chicago."

Shortly thereafter, Jerry died.  :(

I'm not a big Grateful Dead fan, but admired the Terrapin Station era. I went to a few concerts in the early and middle 70's including Watkins Glen in '72 with the Allmans and the Band taking turns playing sets for 3 days. That was a very satisfying show, although I think I remember more about it now than I did at the time.
