One pipe not getting as hot as other???
« on: April 26, 2008, 06:38:42 am »
My #2 pipe is not getting as hot as the other three on my 76 cb750k. I adjusted the points, put new plugs in,and made sure I had spark in all the plugs. What next ,before messing with the carbs?
Any ideas whats going on?

...you could try changing the plug, checking resistance in the plug cap (or just swap a plug cap and see if the problem follows the cap), and snip the plug wire back.  After that its on to carbs!!! :P

I did change the plug,so its not that. How do I check the plug resistance?

How do I check the plug resistance?

...set u'r multimeter to resistance and put one probe on each end of the cap...I want to say the resistance is 0.4???  Or, you could just swap caps, if that pipe is still cold/warm, then u know thats not it.

I have the same issue with my 400, I also double checked all ignition and plugs but still the same so it appears to be a fuel issue, the thing is I have balanced the carbs get a perfect idle and no misfire.

Check you valve tappet adjustments,
If you wish to avoid addressing the carbs, then do a compression check to verify all cylinders are in good mechanical condition.

Then it is on to the carbs.  Maybe its just a carb sync needed, or a plugged slow jet for the carb with the cool exhaust.

travis, have you checked the plugs to make sure they aren't loose? we didn't re tighten them after you heat cycled the motor and it is possible one backed out.

Also #2 was one of the ones you put in, did you tighten it all the way to begin with?

I made sure it was tight,I took it out checked if it had spark, put it back in and made sure it was tight.Pipe still didn't heat up as much as the others,so I took it back out and put in a new plug  and made sure it was tight and still same issue. So I am pretty sure after taking it out and putting it back in 3 or so times,I am pretty sure atleast one of those times I managed to get it all the way tight.
I am going to try swithing the plug caps with one of the other ones and see if that makes a difference. If not I guess I am off to checking the compression and then the carbs.

Do you know where I can get an extension for my compression tester so I can check #2
and #3 ?

You can get an extension from sears. Pretty cheap.

As far as it not doing heating up like the others, I had the same exact problem. Changed different caps, changed to different spark plugs. Nothing ever changed it either. I then adjusted my fuel height with the floats and presto, all is great running order. You can also achieve this by taking the float bowl off the carb w/o removing the whole assembly, saves a great deal of time!!

Btw., what does the spark plug look like when you pull it out? If it's wet, you know you're getting too much fuel.. just my .02 cents.

Hope you figure it out, cause i know how it can be a pain in the arse. =)
