  • I know the pieces fit...
Hi! I'm glad I joined these forums, and i've got about 6 tabs open with all kinds of information about parts, carbs, fuel tanks etc etc. My bike was bought used for $600 with 20K miles on it almost 2 years ago, I rode it for one season and it hasn't been ran for over a year now :( Hopefully I can get it started this year. I've basically joined here in search of advice from the experts on these old classics, I've called around my home town area and NOBODY wants to work on older bikes like these!

One question I wanna know ASAP is what can I do to treat/coat/clean my fuel tank from rust and grime? I took it off, and drained the fuel. Now I'm anxious to get it cleaned out!  Any links on threads about cleaning fuel tanks?

oh ya...type in rusty tank in the search link.  there's the nut and bolt method, the mollasas (spelling is wrong but the heavy brown stuff), and chemical tank cleaner.   i used the tank liner Kream on mine but that was before i knew better. the knock on kream is that oftentimes the lining agent doesn't cure properly but mine turned out fine.  these guys know EVERYTHING.  good luck!

Thanks for the reply, ya, I cleaned my tank out today. I went with the nuts and bolt method, then I used 'The Works' toilet cleaner method that was mentioned. It turned out all pretty good, and I got plenty of exercise shaking the fuel tank for 20 minutes trying to get that LAST nail out!  :D

Now, I don't know if there is a final product I can use to coat it so its rust proof now, I could try that Kream stuff, but I'm not very good at following instructions, might screw it up...Any other products?

I used the POR-15 kit and it worked like a charm! no leaks and it looks shiny new inside.

I am up in Iowa City with my 78 550k.  There are a few folks around here with these Hondas, but most of my friends ride old BMW's.  Nice to know there are more people in the area.
