78 CB750F2 Valve Removal
« on: August 16, 2005, 08:47:09 AM »
Hello all,

I'm in the process of rebuilding the engine for the first time and need to know if it's possible to removal the valves from the head using a home-made tool or do I have to buy the Honda item?

Thanks

Assume you mean the valve spring compressor.

Any compressor will do as long as it will reach (most car compressors won't). I bought a motorcycle one in the 70's and have used it ever since - it wasn't the Honda tool but just designed for OHC bikes.

Made one out of a C-clamp.
Soldered a modified plumbing fitting to the flat face.
Had to modify the clamp a bit to fit over the edge of the head.

I bought one at Sear's in the auto tool section in 99' that worked great.  Think it was about $20.

..same here...I just bought one in the spring from Sears...works like a charm.  If it doesn't work, Sears will take it back.  Be advised, the springs on the F model are extra stiff!  Be sure and wear u'r eye protection and watch for flying valve retainers!!! :o

How about some part numbers on those Sears tools, please?
I looked for a while and couldn't seem to locate one that would work on motorcycle heads.
I have been using a C clamp and a small length of galvanized pipe with a section removed from the pipe to access the keepers. Similar to the home made tool pictured above but not soldered together. It works well but is not all that convenient.

Thanks guys. Unfortunately the Sears site is "currently being reconfigured". I hope those links work when they are finished screwing around with it.

Here's one at JC whitney. I bought a slightly different one from them for 18.99 but couldn't find it listed. Works great.

Ooooh, that's nice!  ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"
