The 2x4s gave the right height off the lift for my bike, but aren't needed for strength. Wood is very strong compression wise.
As long are there is ANY of the frame available on both sides on the 400F, that isn't covered by exhaust pipe, an adapter should work. even if its two spots 1" long per side. If the bike's centre of gravity is offset, that's no problem, just use safety straps to hold that end from tilting.
If the pipes hang lower than the minimum lift clearance, that's a problem that can be overcome in two steps. I have chains hanging from my garage cross beam, that I use to winch up the front end. A two stage solution may be the answer to low pipes. i.e. first winch then slide in adapter and jack.
On the new GSXR750 (the other bike in the pic), fairing completely covers the lower frame members, so the fairing has to come off before the bike can be jacked up.
