My 550 has been my daily rider for over 2 years now.  I've had a blown fuse, a broken master link and once she wouldn't start after a rain storm.  All of which would have not occurred if I were a little more diligent about inspection things a little closer.  When you are tweaking one system, be sure to keep you eyes open for other "repair opportunities"!!

As for other uses...

550 as grocery getter
550 as growler getter (a growler is a half-gallon jug of beer)
550 as golf cart

Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

I agree with the other posts, a bikes as reliable as the owner makes it. I have used my '75 550K as a daily commuter for the past 2 years w/o any problems. I am meticulous though when it comes to maintenance. The  biggest concern is watching out for all the cagers out there!

Got me thinking about installing one of those... of course I'd have to paint it flat black to match my bike.  8)

I use mine as a primary mode of transport. Only when snow falls, or I need to pick up both of my kids at once, or weekly grocery shopping i consider use of a car.
My CB never let me down. But you need to talk to her. Every now and then... alone.... in the shed... evenings are good... when family is not pestering you....  ;D ;D ;D
Welcome to my mountains!

And always have a social ale or two with them, but when they start answering you when you talk to them its time to stop lol

You all are inspiring me to lean on my rebuilt 750 a little harder.  So far it's rock solid with 500 miles put on it this spring.

I bought my cb 750 K7 with F2 engine 5 years ago. This was my first bike. I didn't know how many miles the engine had on it, and I didn't have any mechanic skills, and I started using it as a daily rider (50 miles a day). Never had a problem with it, and with the normal maintenance, just adding oil due to the engine wear (valves and pistons), never left me on the road. Almost 2 years ago, I started rebuilding the engine, because since I owned the bike, I became more interested on mechanics, and learned a lot (a lot from this forum). I didn't became paranoid, but when I knew what an engine had inside, I decided to rebuild mine just to be absolutely sure that this would be totally trustable, that when I finish the rebuild it will be a 0 miles engine that can be used as a daily rider.
Anyway, IMO, the more simple something is, the less problems it has. An air-cooled engine, carburettors, simple electrics... is understable even for a person with basic mechanic skills, like me, and the maintenance is easy. I drive also a 20 years old car, a Peugeot 205. Some people laughs at me for driving such an old car, but it has never given me any problem...

exactly what i keep telling so many people.....
they say "why do you drive an old bomb like that?" so i ask them how much does it cost you for a service on your car?, how much does it cost for you to replace something when it breaks?
costs me 45 minutes to do a full service on my 30 year old escort and bugger all to replace a broken part (and it out handles many of the "family cars" that they drive lol), the bike (2 years older) has cost me more than a car so far but will be much better fuel wise than the car and the best part is I CAN WORK ON IT MYSELF

i use my as my primary means of getting to work in the summer.  just rode her today (only in minnesota will someone wake up, see the temp is 35.6 and say its warm enough to ride 15 miles to work).  i do talk to her a lot and "pet" her tank a lot too though.  considering what she went through before i got her, its the least i can do (and the fact that she still runs after i've been working on her ;))
