Wiring shenanigans and a regulator/rectifier too

So heres my problem. I "moved" all the electronics under my seat on my 76' 550k. I used the original brackets to hold the 3 main connectors and welded them on where I wanted them. I however forgot about the connector coming from the lower part of the engine and now I am up short. As seen here.





Although when pulled straight there is only maybe 3 inches of gap left. To route it out of the way and hide it I would need to add about another 5 or so inches. I was just wondering on some opinions or ideas on what the easiest/cleanest way to extend the wiring on the left would be.

Thats the minor problem now on to the bigger one.

I have got a hold of a regulator/rectifier that I want to wire to the bike (cycle re-cycles combined unit). Now I want to make sure I have this right.




Or maybe some one can better explain more clearly how to wire this thing up. (or a system for figuring this out) The instructions are not really giving me the confidence to do this without some help.


At least I got ONE out of the 3 connectors   :-\

I can take a stab at your reg/rectifier..

For the rectifier portion, the Honda rectifier has the 3 yellow wires and the heavier green and red wires. It looks like these are the same for your new unit. The heavy red and green wires carry electrical energy back into the battery, with the diodes acting as one-way valves so power from the alternator can only go into the battery. The three yellow wires carry alternating current from the stator to the rectifier. Since the current alternates, the diodes sort out the positive and negative charges, so the order in which they are connected together doesn't matter.

For the regulator side of things, it's a bit different. The original Honda regulator has three wires, black, green and white. On your unit, the white wire would go to the white wire on the field coil, the black wire from the reg/rectifier would go to the green wire on the field coil, and the blue reg/rectifier wire connects to the black wire in the main harness.

Thanks Jonesy, thats pretty much what I was looking for. Hopefully I will have time to finish it tomorrow.

As for the short connector I am just going to have to extend it engine side wire by wire.

I put this problem aside for a while and worked on some other things but now its the only thing left to do! So here's where I am...


I have the rectifier side of the unit hooked up correctly and it works perfectly.

According to the card that came with my unit. (seen above in the first post) I should have a black, a blue and a white wire left coming from the unit. On the unit I received there is the white wire and 2 black wires left.

Since the white goes to the white I am now only left with 2 possible combinations for the wires that are left. My unit has 2 blacks and my bike has a black and a green. When I try either of the combinations my main fuse blows.

If it helps narrow down the problem at all the charging system works fine with the after market rectifier wires plugged in and the stock regulator plugged in. Which is what makes me think that the regulator part of the unit is/bad.

Would a faulty regulator be grounding out power causing my main fuse to blow like this?
Has anyone else successfully completed this mod with a stock harness?

I bought one of these, same supplier I think, and I tried to fit it--even with Two Tired's  adroit suggestions, I couldn't get it to work. Its sitting on my workshop bench (make me a deal, we'll talk ;D).  I just ordered a new rectifier and regulator from the supplier in Oregon via ebay.
