Trade 72 Sportster for 97 TL 1000S, anyone rode one?
« on: April 29, 2008, 03:52:09 PM »
As the title says I have an offer to trade my 72 Sporty which needs new rod bearings and the top end rebuilt for a ride and drive 97 Suzuki TL1000S.

It has 32000 miles on it and a new clutch last year. I had never even heard of one before so I know nothing of how they ride or handle. Research says the 97s had some problems (oil leaks, misfire, clutch problems) but I was wondering if any of you had some real world experience with one?
There are old bikers and there are bold bikers but there are very few old, bold bikers.

Not doing what you can to make your bike ride-able during the best riding months of the year kind of defeats the purpose of owning it in the first place.

The tl1000 is a really nice street bike. Pretty good top end power (close to 140, I think) and lots of grunt.
Handles well, a bit heavy, but a fun bike. Had a friend die on one, but he was drunk.
No.

72 XL has a slight problem, barrels and head gaskets are a bit hard to find.. 1 year only I believe..

You are talking 2 vastly different bikes.. You could both end up ecstatic... overly unhappy or somewhere in between..

and both may not have the same feeling in the end..

72 is getting back there and a bit unique.. both could be fun bikes.. a sorta tough call..

the only question you need to ask is whether or not you will miss the harley.
