I searched and it looks like the 750's require removal but nothing hit for 550s.

Sadly, yes, engine out for that on 750's.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Wait a minute, seems to me there are some posts about folks snaking a new one in there without removing the engine. Try a search. Not sure I'd try it, but removing an engine just for that does seem like a pain in the butt.

I think you're asking about the 550, right?  If so, you should be able to perform a complete top-end rebuild with the engine in the frame should you so desire.  750s are a different story.

Oh, heck, you don't need to remove the engine for that.

Manual says it can be done in frame.

As for the 750, I read here somewhere that you can lift up the valve cover a wee bit, remove the old one and slide the new one in underneath

The valve covers just unscrew to access the tappets.  8 of them.  Can be replaced when on the bike.

Th cam cover can also be replaced with the engine in frame.  But, if you don't put it back on right, you bend all the valves, and the engine won't run right anymore.
\Best look into getting a manual for the engine if you want to fix the it without creating a much bigger headache.

On my 550 I was able to take the whole top end including the cylinder head and cylinders, which was really nice considering I couldnt get one of the engine mount bolts out.  It made for a lot less weight to have to wiggle off that bolt.
