New from Chicago
« on: May 01, 2008, 10:52:37 AM »
Brand new to the scene and brand new to the site. I'm picking up a '78 Honda CB550K4 Saturday afternoon and I've never been so excited to get started on a project before. Not that I've ever done a project like this, but it's the learning experience that I'm in it for....and the ride.

Hope to learn a lot from everyone's experience and knowledge here in this forum and hope that this site will only get larger and better for the years to come.

I'm from Chicago as well.  What part of the city are you from?

Located in the suburbs outside Chicago. Wheeling to be exact. I've done a good amount of reading and researching the last few days. Good to know there are a few shops that can help me with some issues I probably wouldn't want to tackle myself. I've heard about Ace and Motorworks.

I feel that the first point of my rebuild would focus on braking and handling(I've read that it's the weakest points on the bike) and I'm wondering because a friend of mine who works on his Moped a lot told me it shouldn't be too difficult to replace and rebuild, but I've heard otherwise from Rebuild blogs and posts.

Stick with Ace.  I've heard some negative things about Motoworks but you might have good luck.  I had to have Chad from Ace help out with an issue a couple weeks ago and he is great to work with.  Really nice guy and isn't looking to kill you with his prices.  Let me know if you ever need any help.

Welcome, and good luck with your project. You'll be surprised at how much you really can do once you get into it.

I haven't.  Is there a shop listing somewhere on the site that I've missed?

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I'm actually planning on starting a "Project bike" thread as soon as I bring the bike home. Only concern I have is that I won't be moving as fast as some of the other people's projects. I guess they have deeper pockets so my project will be moving along with my small budget.

As for the list...I simply went to our regional forum before I even signed up here and took a look around. Not to mention I've destroyed my eyes over the past week web browsing on any and all information about the CB and local shops.

Got a lot of advice reading other people's projects and looked up some of the local clubs around like a guy named PROTEAL who has a club around here

Welcome, I'm also in Chicago. There are quite a few Honda riders in town. Many people meet up on Mon. and Friday nights at a bar called The Continental.

Welcome from Fullerton and western in the city.
I too just bought a new bike A 1978 CB750F2.
I just sold my old trusty Cb550 a few weeks ago.

I haven't been to the continental yet. It was too cold and wet before i sold my last bike and the new one will need some work before i want to show it off.

Seeya!
