What kind of soft saddle bags do you use?
« on: April 29, 2008, 11:09:19 AM »
I'm looking for saddlebags for my 550 and was considering hardbags but want something that doesn't require moving the turnsignals. What do you use and what do you think of them?

These guys have the best prices, quality of product, with some very cool features...I have a set of the 40 litre bags as well as a tank bag -mini magnetic one...see avatar. Having tried the more expensive Marsee option (would never have these again after going through 2 sets!!), Im glad I found Motopak!

The 40 litre bags detach so you can carry one or both by the carry handle. And they have rain covers. The magnetic tank bag is used daily and great for day trips. I have a larger tank bag for longer trips.

And...they usually sell cheaper on Ebay!!

cheers

Here's a little secret...You want to look at ebay and type in the search box: Honda saddle bags (CX, CB)

I have a set of hard saddle bags from Hondaline that fit the 1980's CB650C and 1978-82 Honda CX500's.

They are absolutely gorgeous!!!

Good luck

Hey Andy.... Are the bags easy to position for going 2 up??  ie... do they get in the way of the passenger pegs.  I'm shoppin' on ebay as we speak for a set of the 90L bags.

Cheers...Joe

Yes Joe unfortunately they do interfere with going 2-up as I found out last year. They get in the way of the passenger foot pegs. I havent yet found a way to get round this. I was going to try again this year.

cheers

I'm looking for saddlebags for my 550 and was considering hardbags but want something that doesn't require moving the turnsignals. What do you use and what do you think of them?

Except for the 77-78 K model 550's, I haven't found any saddle bags, hard mount or throw over, that allow both the rear signals to remain in the stock location AND allow a passenger to use the rear pegs.
I've looked, but I don't thin there are any.  There simply is not enough room for bags in the proper location with the rear turn sigs in place.

Be happy to find out otherwise.  ;D

Joe, Im planning on a weeks trip to Upstate NY this summer with the g/f on the back of the CB750K4 and we are camping! So it going to be a challenge to see if we can fit everything on. I already have the high 70`s back rest for her comfort and strapping stuff to the back....now just to figure out the luggage issue...its easy when solo but more of a challenge when 2 of you...but it can be done! I did it a couple of times on the back of a ZRX1200 in Japan.

Thanks for all the suggestions/info regarding bags that you can use without relocating the signals. There are saddlebags all over the web,etc...but it's nice to get the opinions of people who use the stuff on the same kind of bike as mine. Unlike most new bikes, our signals are not located in a luggage-friendly place. I'd prefer not to purchase something only to have to return it or worse damage it due to it melting (and not be able to return it).

Camping is the idea in mind for my situation as well.  I'm actually looking for a set of bags that work on my '07 Triumph Bonneville  because the $(#@)* one's I bought from the dealer wont allow for my wife's feet on the passanger pegs.  How dumb is that :( They're triumph bags and they wont fit 2 up comfortably.  I'm probably going to swing for the Motopak GTS-60 bags on ebay (thanks for the tip ;)) and i'll just have to rig 'em to fit for 2.

Cheers...Joe

Dunno if it's been listed yet, but I run gear from Nelson-Rigg.  www.newenough.com is a great site for discounted gear.  I've bought luggage, jackets, gloves, and all sorts of stuff from them!

And I'll keep going back.

I just bought saddlebags from a place called moto-direct on ebay. I paid 52.00 for both over the saddle type.(I ain't paying $200.00 or more for what I want them for) I knew I wasn't going to just take them out of the box and be done. I have to do some minor customizing and they will fit perfectly between the original turn signal location and the side cover. They will also clear the exhaust by about an inch. If its too hot I'll fab an insulation to keep it cool. Also, the passenger footpegs will still work for the passenger. These will work on the 350 so bigger sizes shouldn't be a problem. They measure 14"L X11"H X6"W. I'll post pics when I'm done.

I remember seeing a set of soft bags that had a hole cut in the side flap above the lid, the turnsignal fit thru the hole and the bag hung low enough to allow the lid to open most of the way.

Maybe you can modify a set...

The bags I mentioned before turned out to be a perfect fit without any modifications. Since I never have a passenger I folded the rear footpeg down to help support the bag. Tonight I'll make a way to secure the bag to the footpeg instead of tying it to the frame. I'm making it so I can release it so I can swing the bag up to get to the seat lock. These bags are cheap so I didn't expect much. They are supposed to be leather but feel like real heavy paper. But for what I need them for they will be perfect. One side is to hold a fly fishing vest and the other to hold lunch. The sissy bar backpack holds the boots and waders as well as reels. Maybe I'll spend more next year and buy better ones but like I said, they'll do for what I want them for.
