« on: May 01, 2008, 08:42:06 AM »
attatched is a picture of the worst one....they are pretty hard so my grandfather who is my carb man fears it may be hard to get the carbs back on. freaking 21.00 a piece from honda..is there anyway to reuse these or is there a good place to buy them..... are there other models that would use the same boot...

I don't know if they will fit your 650, but I have some off a 750 that you could try.  They are old, but still in pretty good shape.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

Sounds good but I have not tried it.

In the same thread "boiling water".

Again no experince...

There is a product that worked on my airbox rubbers...  Rubber Renue
Before they were unusable - hard as a rock.
I hit them with a heat gun and that softened them a bit, but as soon as they cooled off - hard as a rock again.

Then I found some Rubber at a local electrical supply house and got a few bottles (they were about $4 each)
poured it in a coffee can, heated the rubbers with a heat gun, and dropped them in and put a lid on it - I could only do 2 at a time.
Left them in about 24 hrs.  They swelled up quite a bit larger than original size, but they were very soft and very pliable.
After another day or so, they went back down to the original size...not quite as soft, but DEFINITELY better/softer than
they were before I started.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

They're not just hard, they're cracked.  You need to buy new ones.

How many times would you like to do this job?

Alright then.  Start at the top of the list of things to soak them in and work your way down.  Then when you get to the end of the list and are a professional at removing/reinstalling carbs and the boots are still split and cracked, buy new ones and install them, and be happy! ;D ;D

Ok, your carb rubbers are cracked and you were getting backfires before...and you are now wondering how to reuse carb rubbers that may be the source of other problems on your bike (and may actually cause damage to your internals).

They are shot and you will need to spend $15-$20 per rubber to get them. Tough noogies, suck it up and spend the money and take this as a lesson in why cheap bikes are really not that cheap and will nickel and dime you to death.

as far as any other rubber pieces that may be hard on your bike - boil them in wintergreen oil and water. Do this outside as it will make your house smell like a giant lifesaver. worked every time for me.

Neighbor used clear RTV to seal his slightly cracked and weathered boots. He rubbed it into  them.

Skip Ebay, but new ones.

Bobber, $21 isn't cheap, but at least they're still available! Some boots...are like they say in the credit card comercial "priceless". The ones I need can't be bought for any price.
Save your pennies and buy new ones. Even if you do soften them up,they'll still give you problems with those cracks.

Better yet, buy two sets and vacuum seal one set in plastic.  That way, in 30 years you'll have an unobtainable set to replace the now old and cracked ones with. :)

Most custom hose shops can make whatever you might need.  I had a radiator hose on a Range Rover custom made.  Cost about $50 compared to about $250 from the dealer at the time.  Just take them your old ones and see how much it would be to have them "rebuilt".  I was living in Houston at the time and just looked up "hose" shops in the phone book.  If that doesn't work then you can always do what I'm doing and toss the old airbox setup and go with velocity stacks.   ;D

I'll look around the shop, I think I may have some for a 650 that are in a lot better shape. You can have them for the shipping.
