Need a quick dirty fix!!!
« on: August 14, 2005, 06:04:38 PM »
Hey guys, I was loaned a ratbagged bike my buddy picked up, to go for a 3 day trip, and I decided to change the oil and teh bolt was a self starting oversiz jobby by the looks of things, and its stripped too!!! any way to get this sucker plugged up so I can ride tuesday???

As long as its mechanically sound, I'll try it, I was thinking a national pipe thread brass plug, with the tappered shape that all pipe fittings have might work, any thoughts??

oh its an 88 GSXR750, and I don't wanna drop the pan if I can avoid it.

Drain the oil, clean the drain hole and bolt really good, and throw some JB Weld on it for 12 hours. Look for an oil pan later.
You're going to ride this thing? Are you bringing enough money for cab fare?

Cab fare?  I'd be thinking about where all that hot oil will go if the plug fails.
I'd rather ride a Yamaha than eat worms.

if the bike had theft insurance it might be an option, but so far JB is takin the cake, or a NPT plug if I can find a tap to getr started,  we shall see.  any other options??

Make a self tapping bolt.

Take a bigger coarse bolt and grind two channels in it, taper the tip and voila!

I'd use a die grinder or a dremel on the coarse bolt.

If it was stripped as a result of overtightening this oil change, double-check that the oil pan isn't cracked.

Dropping the pan is usually not a big deal and probably the only correct way to fix it.  Either replace it with a used one or tap the hole for a larger size plug.  The pan is most likely aluminum, so drilling and tapping needs to be done carefully.

If you are looking for an easy fix I think I have seen a rubber repair plug that you insert and then it expands as you tighten the bolt supplied with it. I've never used one but I think I have seen them at most auto parts stores.

I'm with Hahnda on this one, I've heard this story before many times, this type of plug will certainly seal and is removeable when you want to, some of us actually carry one just in case.

These wonderful little birds are great flyers, delicious eating, excellent for training your hunting dog, and just fun to shoot,or stuff and keep around the house.  Bobwhites can be put with other types of Quail and have very large penis's.  Quail are very popular with the babes.

Thanks Guys, for the record, the JB weld, worked for a three day trip on the twisty bumby backroads of BC.
