turn signal won't blink under 3,000 rpm's
« on: April 30, 2008, 09:18:57 AM »
My turn signals won't blink under 3,000 rpm's and the last time I used them I blew the fuse. I assume I have a short somewhere as far as the blown fuse goes. So, my question is, is there a common place  noted for wire rubbing that I should check? and, is the 3,000 rpm signals related to the short somehow?

you might pull each signal apart and check for corrosion, that might be part of it causing more resistance for them not to work like they should . I'm not sure of a common place to check for wear. Also make sure you have all the same watt bulb in each signal housing. I know mine acts stuborn and works slowly with the iginition on and the motor off, but works better with the motor running, hope it helped... ;D

Also buy an electronic flasher from an autostore - $7 - will work at any RPM!

cheers
Andy

I cleaned all the fitting and bulbs on my K5 till I was blue in the face then decided to try a new flasher, now works like a charm. Still had the original flasher as well as some of the original bulbs and fuses.

Another vote for the relay... I had a very similar problem.

Later, Phil

The stock flasher is sensitive to battery voltage fluctuations, as well as bulbs that provide different loading onto the electrical system.
I use the stock flasher as a voltage monitor on my bikes. They blinkers slow down when the battery is draining, and flash faster when the charging system is increasing the battery voltage.  I'll increase the RPMs if I'm in stopped in traffic a lot, which keep the battery better charged.

You didn't give many details about your bike; year model, or electrical changes you've made.  (which makes this post longer than necessary.)

Things that can make your flashers slow:
Weak battery
wrong size flasher bulbs
Higher bike electrical load (bigger headlight, low ohm coils, etc.)
Faulty charging system.

Yes, you can change the stock flasher for an electronic one.  But, some of them start "off" rather than "ON", so you get a delay before signal flash.  (No more quick lane changes--safety issue)
You also don't get the "battery state" information, until it is a far more serious condition.
