I got the old bike blues
« on: July 20, 2008, 12:19:54 PM »
I've had this bike for a month or so, and have been making repairs and such just about every week. I've noticed that the front end was stiff and decided to change the fork oil. Well, in the pics the seller sent he said the brakes were leaking by the caliper, but it looked to me like the fork seal. It was. When I drained the oil the right side was black and nasty, the left side was all water.  :(  I flushed it out and when I put the drain plug back in it twisted off.  >:(  I managed to get the broken piece off and buy new plugs, then decided to pull back the dust cover. Lots of water and cruddy dirty oil, also some of the chrome is worn off.  :o  So now I'm off to find fork seals with dust wipers.
No matter how fast or how far I rode, I couldn't leave her memory behind.

Just a thought....if the chrome is worn off where the seal is, you may need more then just a seal and boot. :-\ For your sake,I hope not.Just thinking out loud.

Yes, pull those forks off and give them a good cleaning.  Get all that water and crap out of there.  You need them clean for the oil channels to flow and give your suspension a good ride.  I sprayed the inside of the lower with carb cleaner and used a shotgun rod to get a cloth down there to get all that crude out.  Good luck with your project...

Yep them puppies gotta be full of crud, will need pulling and total cleaning.
Should improve handling by about a million percent.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

They still seem to ride stiff, but not like before.

I have been thinking of trying to fit a Buell front end  :-\
