CB750K4 - mirror, mirror....
« on: May 05, 2008, 06:36:34 AM »
Ok so Ive gone from having fairly large mirrors on the K4 to the bar end mirrors (Euro bars). Im still not satisfied as I feel the bar end mirrors stick out too much so Im looking for any ideas for bar mounted mirrors...something sleek and low profile but not too modern. Anyone got any clear suggestions?

Here is what I have now...

and what I had...

I need something inbetween. Ive already bought a cheapo EMGO mirror (square) but turned out to be too big.....

thanks for any suggestions.

cheers
Andy

I know I`ve seen bar end mirrors that actually curl back over the grips, no idea of pics but know i`ve seen them.
They dont stick out like the mirrors you have and dont stick up like the stock ones.

The Napoleon and Napoleon-style mirrors are like this.

The stock mirrors work well largely because of their "goofy" size and position.  Bar end mirrors either need to be out (left to right width)  far enough to avoid showing you a good veiw of your hand / arm or up high enough to view over the hand.  With drag bars and superbike bars this is particularly problematic.  I think that the napolean bar ends stick up high enough that that at least on some handlebar types they view over your hand / arm.   I personally haven't found the perfect combo of style and function for mirrors.  I am using drag bars with expensive Oberon bar end mirrors that are a tiny 2 1/4" mirror that mounts into a modern sportbike looking bar end weight.  These are clean in appearance but work poorly. I have the mirror stalk coming out of the bar end downwards (rather than from the end) so that the mirror is below the grip and out just a bit.  Looks cool this way but again not very functional.  Convex glass would help if I can find someone to make it for me.  For a while I had 3 inch round mirrors (stockers are something like 4.5) mounted on long stalks that bent down low putting the mirrors just over my hands.  Looked a bit more subtle than the stock setup but still didn't do it for me aesthetically.  It did work better than the Oberons tho.  Are those CRG mirrors Andy, or are they knockoffs? Here's a pic of the 3 inch stalk type mirrors mirrors and the Oberons.

I've used Napoleons on several different style of handlebars, and the only thing I could ever see in them was straight behind me and slightly off to the side, which is exactly what I want to see.  No hand, arm or shoulder.  It's because they're mounted just above your hands that they allow you to see what you need to see with them.

Eurban I like those 3` mirrors! Thats the kind of thing Im looking for - where did you get them?

The bar end mirrors I have are Ebay knockoffs -work ok and can see out them fine but they stick out!!  ;)  I think Napoleons are the same?

I want to know too, what kind of mirrors are those?  Mine are not only big, but I can't see anything but me in them.  I have to pull an elbow in to look back.  I have been looking for mirrors that sit lower and further out, those look good.

I made the 3 inch mirrors out of two different sets of mirrors.  I bought a set of 3 inch round mirrors off of ebay.  Here's a link to a set up for sale now. . . .

cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CHOPPER-BOBBER-HARLEY-DAVIDSON-ROUND-MIRROR-3-NEW_W0QQitemZ110248061157QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item110248061157&

These slide freely on (and completely off of) their shafts until you tighten down the set screw.  The shaft they come with is short and has a standard pitch thread.  It is however essentially the same diameter as the stock mirror shafts.  I then bought an inexpensive set of Emgo or KK mirrors from Dennis Kirk (DK part number 39-1568) that were about 4.5" round with long shafts that had 10mm threaded ends (to fit the stock mounts).  These were also of the free sliding variety so I simply removed the mirrors and made use of these long shafts for the 3 inch round mirrors.  The long shafts were bent to have the mirror pretty high up so I used a good bit of persuasion (in a vice) to bend the shafts down to position the mirrors where I wanted them.  The chrome on the shafts held up inspite of the bending.  The bends are slightly different from left to right because the MC mount is higher up than the clutch lever mount.  Anyways, the end result worked OK although I found that it was easy to bump the mirrors out of adjustment and that it was difficult to tighten up the ball pivoting mechanism on the mirrors sufficiently to keep them from moving a bit under high speeds. Enjoy.

Here's a dumb question for you guys since you're on the subject.  Do the bar end mirrors attach to the grip, or to a plug in the end of the bar?

Plug into the end of the bar. Mine (see pic) use an allen key mechanism to expand itself inside the bar. You need to cut a hole in your grips.

i started looking for replacement mirrors because the one of the stockers would always let the wind adjust it at speed.  i found a pair of the expensive napoleons on ebay for super cheap and figured i would try em out.

the view is more functional than stock- less me, more behind me.

the vibrations are way less than stock.

i think i have euro bars too- dont know, bought em off proteal a while ago, but with the pull back and the inch or so teal cut off each end they make the situation much more streamlined and i still get a virtually me free view of the road behind.

could not recommend them more highly.

I was going to say if you think they stick out too much you might be able to take a lil' off the bar ends to compensate.  I'm just using stockers on eurobars.  bent them down just slightly and it seems to help get my arm out'a the view.
