Will a baffle fit this pipe?
« on: May 02, 2008, 06:31:18 AM »
I bought my 78 CB550 with this 4 into 1 exhaust.  I like the look of this shorter pipe but it doesn't have a baffle in it so it's pretty loud.  If I could find a baffle for it could I cut the baffle if needed, drill a hole in the pipe to secure the baffle, etc?

Hi,
Measure the diameter and length you need. Call me Monday 05/05. Orient Express Racing 631-231-9552. Ask for Ken. I might be able to find something to fit or modify to fit.

As a suggestion and only my 2 cents. Find a big washer to slide down the pipe to where it wont go any further. Then pack the pipe with cheap stainless steel scrubbies from the dollar store. As many as it takes. Then find some washers to neckdown the exhaust against the scrubbies. Two or three screws around the pipes end to hold the new baffle /washer in. Just a thought. Try it with vise grips holding the last washers in before you drill holes. If nothing else youl l find that it will run easier with some good back pressure. Again only my 2 cents

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

Well Canuck, that's what slamming into a sidewalk curb at 35-40 miles an hour does does to your tank.  I found the same tank online 2 days later, just dropped it off at the body shop the other day for a paint job.  You'll notice my side fairing is a different color as well, ya that was obliterated.  during this experience I was reminded that concrete doesn't have any give  ;D

Thanks for your suggestions guys!

If Ken can't find something that works, Dynoman has a rather large selection of baffles now.  http://dynoman.net/exhaust/baffles.html

Something we used to do years ago..which works fairly well..is relatively easy to install..but probably illegal if stopped by police is:

Find perforated sink drain grate (as used in shower drains et al.) that approximates the inner diameter of the pipe/megaphone you want to install in.  Then get brass rod of approximately 1/4 " diameter..drill hole in rod section in middle to accommodate a screw to hold sink grate to it.  Drill two holes..top and bottom in the megaphone/pipe to accommodate the rod.  Insert rod and grate into the megaphone and screw together to hold in megaphone.

If you position the grate properly you can rotate the grate either parallel or perpendicular to the pipe-megaphone..to be either open or closed (baffled).

Works pretty well.  Not as quiet as regular baffle or muffler..but considerably quieter than open pipe.  We used to do this for off-road versus street use.  Only drawback is the two holes in megaphone to install baffle.  And again..is probably not strictly legal.  But with all the open pipes seen today (especially with the V-twin cruiser crowd)..it's noticeably quieter than that.
