Preparing for trackday

Hi there,
Since time is running out for the "Moto classic trophy" on the circuit of Zolder (Belgium) on the 19th of June, have to really start working on my 'Japauto' replica. It is the first time for this bike to get on a circuit, but hope there will be a lot more in the future.



If you like it I will keep you informed about the progress.
Are there more of us using the bike for trackdays?

Go Rob Go. By all means keep us informed.

My old K3 was a production racer back in the day so no I have no plans to take it back out there, but there is a plan hatching to build some other little missile!

Has been a productive day. Swapped engines, swingarm and carb's. Need to finish the oiltank next.

I love that fairing bracket on the stem nut, nice work.

 What are the forks, look like old Lockheed or maybe Grimeca?

 What is on the outer edge of the head fins ?

Thanks 754, forks are ø35mm CB900FZ. Front calipers are (new)Grimeca's, rear is Lockheed both with Grimeca master's. Just love them. Damage to the fins, think after a crash. Need to change that, but the oillines to the cooler will hide it from sight. Have a 850 kit with  other head lying around waiting to be installed.

Sure dont see Lockheeds often, popular pattern though, Performance Machines first cast Calipers fit same pattern.

I think all the Rickmann kits had Lockheed rotors and calipers.. nice original racer stuff..

Hi there,
Need some advice about my preps for the track. Because I use a total loss system, there is no need for all the excessive equipment. Removed alternator and want some advice about blocking the oilpassage in the crank that oils the starterpignon. Used to glue a needle bearing inner sleeve on the crank, although never a problem I wonder if there are other solutions.........


This is my prepped housing that will get a nylon crashplate on it. Hopefully won't need it.

I welded one crank. I would make an aluminum spacer with a flange towards the main bearing, and .002  smaller than crank. Press it on, try to not get tight against case, mabe a pir of feller guages against case to stop it.

Hi 754, that an possibility. You mean a spacer that's on a press fit? And further no Loctite or what?
Here is one with the Nylon protector.

Think I do it this way. Inner ring from a ordinary ball bearing and glue it with Loctite 603.




Should do the trick.

Since, at last, the bodyparts are at the painters (everything "Ford Colorado Red") I'm lying the minimum wiring needed for the total loss circuit. Does anyone of you guys know how big a fuse should be for a Dyna 'S' with coils? Haven't a clue how much it takes from the battery. There is nothing on the bike, no lighting, no starter, just battery and ignition.

What are the discs (with slots) in your last picture? They look pretty trick!

Hey TG,

Fairly happy with the bike myself too! I will make it, have to........ am commited to do so or I will be having some 'problems' with my sons!!!! No it'll be ok, the engine runs well, have finished the oiltank just have to spray some VHT-paint on it.
Discs are pretty rare items, they come from Team Marlboro Agostini, back in the 80's. Are ø320 mm in diametre, though Yamaha only seems to use ø300 on the production racers TZ350,500 & 700/750. Maybe a special badge?? Who knows?

I run a total loss system on my CB750 racer.  I use an in-line blade type fuse.  Go for a 20-30 amp one.  Basically you want the fuse to hold up just short of the bike catching on fire.  Nothing worse than having your race stopped early for a blown fuse.

Think I willstart without and measure the amps and then decide to put a fuse in or not.
Hope to have the paintwork back someday next week, so I can do some trailruns.

Thanks Sam, I will make it on time, no matter what. Seat is to be upholstered and they promised me it will be ready! Just a few minor things and then off we go.
Must say the pic's do the bike no justice. Will have someone make some better ones at Zolder.
What I am very pleased about is the GROWL!!!! of the exhaust. We'll put some 'music' on You Tube.

       Got in on this one a little behind, but went through all the posts and this is one Great Looking Race Bike that you have build here. 8) ;) As with the others, I wish you well and you certainly have a FINE ride to go on, Rob! ;)

Hey TG,
With my posture I need to take some food with me, or I won't last.
Tires I am running for now are: Bridgestone BT45 in front and AVON Roadrunner AM 21 in the rear. Think is not the ultimate combo, but have to do for now. Once I sorted out the bike will go for some 'stickier' types. What would you recommand?

I am running a 90/90-18 Avon AM20 in front, and a 130/70-18 AM23 in the back.

Might try Dunlop KR124 / KR164 for next season

But first of all you should consider the rim widths you have, useless putting a race compound tire if the rim is too narrow and it squishes it to a worng profile.
