kick starter issues?
« on: May 04, 2008, 07:16:45 PM »
Ok guys.  I am new to these bikes and have been steadily building my cb550.  I started it today and it was going fine then all of a sudden CLANG!  I killed the engine and slowly tried to kick it over.  Well I kept getting a "hard spot" then it would move freely.  I took off the valve cover and realized it wasn't the valves.  They all look fine and dandy.
I thought that it had to be a rod at this point.
I tried to slowly kick it over again and realized that it wasn't turning.  I pulled the stator and cranked it by hand.  The engine turns fine, but I hear a sound from over by the kick start.
Again, I don't know these engines well.  Is there an issue with the 550's and the kick starter?  Its a 76.
Is it easy to fix, or should I pick up a 650 and swap engines? (one for sale locally pretty cheap)  If it is fairly easy to fix, I would like to keep what I have.  I am not a mechanic, but have have some skills (mostly old VW's).

I forgot to mention that the "hard spot" was when the kick starter actually engaged.  But it is only briefly like it is not making full contact inside.

Anybody?   Is it possible that a gear broke off from the kickstarter and it bouncing around in there?

will the kick starter rotate the engine at all....could it be coming from the clutch area ?
Somebody chime in here...
