Methods for forming HONDA tank emblems...?
« on: May 05, 2008, 06:25:46 PM »
I was wondering if anyone had installed NOS Honda emblems on a stock gas tank recently. The emblems used to come pre-curved to fit the tank, but Honda reduced them to a flat emblem with a single part number. You now have to bend them to fit the curvature of the tank. Mine seem very stiff and I'm scared of breaking them... They only seem to want to bend between the letters in the word Honda.

Any tips? Thanks!

Jonesy,

I was going to give this a try.... don't know if it will work or not.

Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Jonsey:

I have a beat up tank kicking around and manipulated them on this tank. Didn't matter if it scratched the paint and fit the new tank perfectly.

Jonesy, I just did my tank with new paint, trim and emblems last year.  Here's what I did and it worked very well.

1. Bend them by hand to a close fit (but not perfect)
2. Cut a piece of leather just a shade larger than the emblem and used it as a temporary backing.
3.  Soft mallet and with the emblem in the slots, over the leather, shaped it with the mallet until I got a perfect fit.
4.  Automotive double-sided trim adhesive comes in different widths.  I used the 3/4" stuff.  The badge has a raised back edge.  I trimmed the tape to fit exactly inside that edge.  Tape went all around the badge, and almost covered the entire back surface. (I don't think it matters if the inside has some bare spots.
5. Apply to tank!  Its very sticky, but with time, it apparently grips even better.
