Seeking members from New Zealand
« on: May 04, 2008, 05:40:48 PM »
Hello people, at the end of May, I am leaving to live in New Zealand for a couple months. I am looking for members who live down there to hook with, hang out with, whatever!  Basically, I know 1 person in the whole country, but im just gonna hang out for a couple months and see how i like it.  Im checking out trademe.co.nz for roommates, and while I was there I was looking for CBs, but didnt have much luck.  Whats the cycle scene like?  Can I rent a bike there, being a foreigner? Do I (can I) get a NZ license?  Im going to bring my helmet and riding gear, is this too optimistic?

i understand I cant get a job with a tourist visa, does anyone know how hard it is to get a work visa?  Ill be in christchurch, if that makes a difference. id love to hear any advice from any kiwi about anything!

Hi, I'm living in Christchurch. Why on earth are you coming to this town? Why not Sydney or Perth? Somewhere exciting and most importantly WARM. You are coming into a Christchurch winter so bring plenty of warm clothes. Do you ski?

Have a good look at www.kiwibiker.co.nz for guys to hook up with and ride with. The kiwibiker guys have a regular wednesday night ride. There is an events calendar too. You can hire bikes here but they are hellishly expensive. You would be best to buy one. Also, if you are familiar with TradeMe keep looking in Motorcycles, Classic and Vintage. A k2 or k3 can be had for about $5000 NZD when they come up, which isn't very often.

Make sure you get it into your head that we drive on the left hand side of the road here. A young American was killed about 3 months ago after leaving a stop and tearing down the road on his hire bike and met a very, very nasty end.

I'm a member of the Classic Japanese Motorcycle Group here. We meet once a month for beer and bull#$%* and we also ride once a month on the 4th sunday. Keep in touch, Mark

tc... you scare me w/ that lefty stuff.  i've never done it.  but, being on a bike for a number of years, i dodge fairly well.   ;)

Awesome.  Im from upstate NY, so christchurch is balmy by my standards.  my cousin lives in christchurch, so thats where im starting out, thinking about going to wellington.

if i like it for the two months im there, i might make the move permanent.

if so, sounds like it would be cheaper to ship my 550 over there than to buy a new bike....

Welington is the place to be, apart from the weather. I spent many years there in the 1970's. I have visited the city off and on over the years and believe it's the place to be. It's a nicer city than Christchurch. Good luck.

Well, the more i hear about the cycle scene, the less confident I feel about my move!! haha

My name was actually chosen for me - by microsoft.  when you cant think of a name, they have a random online name generator, and NarcoticRex made me laugh my ass off, so i stuck with it.

so there are a couple of you guys on here, how much did you pay for your sohc4s? i thought parts might be easier to come by in the south pacific....is asically everyone in NZ who owns a 70s honda a member of these forums?

I sourced my K0 on eBay in 2005 and had it shipped out of San Francisco. The K0 was never imported here, as far as I can tell. I couldn't find one after years of looking, anyway, and those that had them were from the U.K. and not for sale.

I paid $5100 USD plus about another $3500 in shipping and taxes etc.

Cost is only part of the story. It's about getting what you want, or have wanted for many, many years and then finally doing it.

As far as I know I have the only K0 in New Zealand that's on the road every week or weekend. The others are garage queens. My bike won Best pre 1970 Restored Bike at the VJMC rally held here a couple of months ago and it was also the first ever "Bike of the Month" on this forum. So I'm pretty happy, maybe proud, but we all know what pride comes before   :o

And on a completely different topic, you will be amused (or not) to see and hear a lot of advertising in the media down here about "free f*****s"

A "free f*****" is something a woman gets when she takes advantage of various costly cosmetic procedures, i.e. "Take advantage of our special of the week, a manicure and pedicure for $49.95 and get a free f*****"

Because I have had a filthy mind ever since I can remember I think it's pretty funny that all the advertising agencies in this country haven't twigged to the alternate meaning. Or maybe they have, and it's all just a big joke being played on their customers, who also seem to have come down with the last shower. (A kiwi saying that means all wet, that is, wet behind the ears, or naive)

Don't ask where the tie up between "wet behind the ears" and naive came from.  Probably from the trenches of Gallipolai or Ypres maybe? Who knows.
