My muffler is quiet and my intake is stock but my bike is louder than I am used to.  It isn't annoy the neighbors loud but louder than any stock bike I have owned (that would be 84 and newer).  Bike sounds real nice and I am not complaining but wondering where all the noise is coming from.  lots of nice engine noise and a good bit of intake honk (or what sounds like it) when I get OFF the gas.

Were bikes just louder in the 70's?

did you recently install a new header?  Did you repalce the gaskets that sit in the exhaust ports?  First time I installed a MAC header on a DOHC CB750, I got the little sheetmetal half moon pieces that fit into the exhaust clamps installed incorrectly and the pipe wasn't being pushed tight against the gaskets in the exhaust ports.  Guess that I wasn't very good at figuring out cryptic instructions with grainy xerox pictures.

The 74 Cb550 K was/is noticeably louder than my 78 Cb550 K3 AND my 75-77 Cb550F models.  This surprised me when I finally sprung to put the stock pipes on my 74 after years of running with an after-market 4 into 2, which I assumed was louder than stock.

(It's hard to say how loud is loud in a print medium without DB meter reference numbers.)  ::)
