Hey,  even Arlen Ness on a Ness 750.

One more add. I do not know about these Pigtails. Did they work at high speeds?

Big Bike went together with its sister mag Choppers..

In the early 70s there was StreetChopper, then Hot Bike (at the same time, samr company0 Hot Bike only lasted a short while. Down the road a few decades Street Chopper became Hot Bike again..

Anyone remeber when FTW was out in newspaper form, before it became Biker?? Back then Bob #$%*in rode a 750 Chopper all over the country for the mag, it had a hot RC motor in a rigid Amen frame.. he rode it 75 K IN ONE YEAR !!

This article comes from Old Bike Journal ( May 1997 ). Rex Wolfenden is the owner, rider & builder. The engine is 970cc with 70mm pistons from a VFR750 and cb1100r rods. Fueled by 31mm Keihin smoothbore carbs to give a 100hp at the rear wheel.

Wow another great post 1080!

So can someone chime in on these 31mm Keihin smoothbore carbs and how they differ from regular CB750 carbs (early type). I ask as it looks like this bike is running the stock airbox and the carbs look very similar to early type? So whats the difference? And how do they compare with CR carbs?

Thanks!
Andy

I think the smoothbore carbs are just that. The carbs intake are cleaned up to give a larger bore and with a very smooth air flow in. ( ie. 29mm bored to 31mm ).

The history that the Cb750 has, the many people that put there ideas to make them go fast. It's funny how this tread is only enjoyed by so few.

This next bike has won many bike shows and is one of my favorites out of Custom Bike July 1982.

1080, I'll bet you'd be surprised how many "lurkers" there are on this thread.  Your past research and collection of vintage articles are outstanding.  Hopefully this thread will inspire some "young 'uns" to follow the path blazed by the early CB750 SOHC builders, if for no other reason than the fun of doing it.  Thanks!  RR

I agree with Ricky that your collection of articles and knowledge about the builds are very impressive and shouldnt be kept to yourself! . There are enough people here who are enjoying this thread and need to see more of these outstanding machines that you have to keep this going!

Once again thank you!

cheers
Andy

(and thanks for the carb info).

I always wondered what happened to these bikes over the years. I would like to think that there are a few sitting in the backs of peoples sheds waiting to be found!

So anyone know anyone with an old bike in the back of their shed ;)

Maybe one day I will find something as ridiculously awesome as some of these bikes. Please keep them coming!

You betcha.  I watch this thread closely when it pops up on the "Show unread posts" page.  I'm saving the articles in a folder called "1080".  Love to read these old articles, makes you realize that there's very little new under the sun with these things, yet at the same time there's always a surprise awaiting around the next bend (or there in the annals of history).

One of the things I like the most about the CB750 is that it gets used as a starting platform for so many different styles of bike, from the longest chopper to the shortest bobber, from the most sedate to the most extreme, and everything in between.

Thanks for posting these.

I got way more mags than 1080, if I get into them I will pick some stuff for 1080 to post.

He figured he better post some of these when people started doubting that you can build 750 Hondas that run a 10 sec 1/4.

I took his 1080 for a short spin on return road at the drags, it def would be a lot quicker with carbs and a hot cam.. it is running a fairly mild one now.. Then he still has the stroker crank...

We grew up reading about these bike that he has posted, there definitely is  room to make a 750 fairly quick. Given todays technology, it should be easy to go at least as quick..

Thanks all. I just needed those kind words to keep on posting.

I'm sure 754 will let me scan and post from his collection when mine runs low. He has one of the best old magazine collection I have seen. I just want to share with you these old articles. Learning from the past is a plus.

The idea that todays new is not always have been the best. I found out in repairing old electronics that, hay, that was invented back then and todays electronics that I was working on was not a new idea.

Yesterdays bikes with todays technology could be awesome.

Some 1978 cb750 adds & a double engine 750 add.   enjoy.

Not a bike, but power by two large big bore 1975 CB750's engines.

Article is from Hot Bike Dec'84 Best Of The Bizarre.

The built was by Richard Wilson ( tool maker & management of the piston shop for Arias ).

It would be nice to some follow up on this project.
