Starting a 15 year dormant 1978 cb750f.
« on: May 11, 2008, 06:47:55 AM »
I came across a 1978 cb750f a while ago, which had been sitting for a good 15 years in storage, and took the usual actions like cleaning the carb inside and out (it was bad) and the gas tank (even worse), and now I finally have them both in operating condition.  Since the previous owner said it was running up until he stored it I thought it would start up when I plug the carb and gas tank back on.  I replaced the battery and turned the key, lights all turned on as expected, put it in neutral and tried hitting the engine start button.  All the lights went dim which is normal as the power is diverted to the starting motor, but the starting motor wouldn't turn, not even click or anything.

So I continued and tried the kickstart.  The engine would turn over nicely with the kickstart, but it wouldn't start.  I then pullled a sparkplug out kept it attached to the cable and kickstarted to see if there was a spark, which there was none.

What should I try to fix first?  could it be a valve/piston problem? What would be causing the spark plug and starter motor problems?

Sounds electrical for sure, check out all your electrical connections. Then wait for one of the guru`s here to give you a more definitive answer.

If it's been sitting a long time like mine and your not getting spark...replace your spark plugs, and points...worked for me on my 71.

If the lights dim when you push the starter button that would mean that power is going to the solenoid at least. If there is no click heard, that would mean to me that maybe the solenoid is stuck. Maybe try tapping on it with the handle of a screwdriver or something to unstick it.

As for your spark problem, make sure all of the electrical connections are clean and whatnot. I personally have found it hard to try to check spark using a plug while kicking a bike over. Maybe have a friend kick it while you make sure that the plug is grounded, or buy one of those clip on spark testers to know that it's grounded well while you are kicking it.

Either way, it sounds like you are pretty close to having it running. Good luck!

The points can oxidize/get a film on them that prevents spark during disuse.  Use a points file to freshen up the contact surfaces.

Check that the OFF-RUN-OFF switch is in the RUN position.
