...or with their arms and legs stretched out in front of them like a motorized lazy boy?

I don't mind Crotch Rockets, although I am not fond of all the latest ones that are all pointy. But I am really tired of the Chrome Cruisers; Harley's, Yamaha Star's, and Victory's. Everywhere I turn theres another one. They are as common as the Ford Taurus. Seems like a big waste of money to be just like everyone else. That's why I like my CB550 and my RD400, I don't see anyone else around with one. Also the sound of the SOHC bikes is totally cool, especially when revved high. Harley's sound good at low rpm, but sound like a grandfathers nose blowing, or a greasy fart at high rpm.
Well..
Coming from one who kinda lived through the evolution of bikes from the 50's to present..can tell you why I still prefer these old SOHC 4's. They're not the most advanced by today's engineering standards..nor are they as antiquated as say the 1930's radial aircraft engine design of most present day Davy Harlison's.
Prior to the "Nanahan's" (SOHC 4 750's) the bikes were either completely obsolete..engineering-wise (Harley's/Indians)..or seriously lacking in new innovations (read the Brit vertical twins, et al..even my beloved Ariel Square Four). After the late 1980's..the bikes eclipsed most everything we liked or expected a two-wheeled ride to be about.
So..that leaves a lot of us "stuck" guess you could say..with the better than previous bikes/engineering..up to late 50's..early 60's..and the too many bells and whistles engineering of modern (post 1980's) crotch rockets/cruisers/tourers, etc.
Another significant aspect of SOHC 4 owners/riders..it seems to me..is that we actually enjoy working-on/wrenching on..and understanding the mechanical minutiae of our rides. Show me a recent Harley or even Gold Wing rider..who expresses this interest or capacity to work on their rides.
There has been a quantum shift in the way most bike owners/riders view the sport/craft today..it seems to me. Notable exceptions: this..other classic bike forums/websites, et al.
I think we are a dying breed. I'm thrilled though..that so many younger folks are so interested/engaged. Whatever remains of the original thrill and fascination for true motorcycling..it seems to me..will be due to their fascination and yes..dedication to our avocation.
Honda SOHC 4's simply represent a hallmark brand and ride that is not only ubiquitous and well-known..but also ushered in an age of motorcycling that was not only more technologically advanced but civilized as well. That is reason alone for my continued love of the line.
