the more types of bikes i see, the more i like mine!
« on: May 08, 2008, 01:23:07 PM »
please permit me to preach to the choir:  the more choppers, crotch rockets and plastic-clad bikes i see, the more i appreciate my bike.  why do people ride hunched over, or with their arms and legs stretched out in front of them like a motorized lazy boy? i ain't aiming to blast off and i'll never be 'cool'...maybe that's why i just don't get it.  yeah, i know they're top heavy, noisy and are a mechanical antique with an electrical system that can't light a flashlight but what's not to like?

I agree, obviously ;), but I appreciate all types of bikes.  After all, if everyone rode classic motorcycles, mine wouldn't be special at all! :'(

Many bikes were passed up when soul was bestowed, the sohc4 was not one of them.

I agree, BUT if money wasn't a problem, I'd love to have a cbr1000rr, or the cb1300r that will probably never be made. Just to have something that has more power = hp than I would ever use, but know that I could flat run away from 90% of everything on the road.  ;D ;D ;D or even the Ducati 1098. Don't get me wrong my 750k is fun, but it does leave me wanting more hp(read it doesn't scare the crap out of me)!!

I don't mind Crotch Rockets, although I am not fond of all the latest ones that are all pointy.  But I am really tired of the Chrome Cruisers; Harley's, Yamaha Star's, and Victory's.  Everywhere I turn theres another one.  They are as common as the Ford Taurus.  Seems like a big waste of money to be just like everyone else.  Thats why I like my CB550 and my RD400, I don't see anyone else around with one.  Also the sound of the SOHC bikes is totally cool, especially when revved high.  Harleys sound good at low rpm, but sound like a grandfathers nose blowing, or a greasy fart at high rpm.

Every time I'm in the Honda shop, I sit on a CBR1000RR, I think to myself, "this'd be pretty nifty". Then there's the reality check...If I were to buy a shiny new bike, I'd be like every other guy out there. Sure, a Sohc4 isnt as fast, or doesn't stop as well as a new ride, but where it makes up for it is in the class and character department. Old bikes just have a ton of personality and charisma the new ones never will. Besides, it's fun to scare the hell out of a guy riding the twisties on a new 600rr by keeping up with him... :D ...Long live our Shiny (or not so shiny) Old Bikes!  ;D

I'm not a cruiser or sport bike guy. For the most part I have always liked the "standard" style bikes. The older CB's and etc. have style and personality that can't really be matched today.

Lately something has changed a little. Every time I see a Ducati Monster my mouth waters. There is something bout that bike that just gets me.

Its an interesting discussion that raises the question of why ride a motorcycle? And why ride an old bike when newer ones with better technology/handling/performance are out there?

I guess for some its the looks, style of an old bike (the personality factor)  and for others its a cheap alternative until the get more money to buy a more modern bike. But at the end of the day a bike is to be used for transport from A to B. Thats what its made for. Perhaps its the experience of getting from A to B that makes the bike?

cheers
Andy

Well..

Coming from one who kinda lived through the evolution of bikes from the 50's to present..can tell you why I still prefer these old SOHC 4's.  They're not the most advanced by today's engineering standards..nor are they as antiquated as say the 1930's radial aircraft engine design of most present day Davy Harlison's.

Prior to the "Nanahan's" (SOHC 4 750's) the bikes were either completely obsolete..engineering-wise (Harley's/Indians)..or seriously lacking in new innovations (read the Brit vertical twins, et al..even my beloved Ariel Square Four).  After the late 1980's..the bikes eclipsed most everything we liked or expected a two-wheeled ride to be about.

So..that leaves a lot of us "stuck" guess you could say..with the better than previous bikes/engineering..up to late 50's..early 60's..and the too many bells and whistles engineering of modern (post 1980's) crotch rockets/cruisers/tourers, etc.

Another significant aspect of SOHC 4 owners/riders..it seems to me..is that we actually enjoy working-on/wrenching on..and understanding the mechanical minutiae of our rides.  Show me a recent Harley or even Gold Wing rider..who expresses this interest or capacity to work on their rides.

There has been a quantum shift in the way most bike owners/riders view the sport/craft today..it seems to me. Notable exceptions: this..other classic bike forums/websites, et al.

I think we are a dying breed.  I'm thrilled though..that so many younger folks are so interested/engaged.  Whatever remains of the original thrill and fascination for true motorcycling..it seems to me..will be due to their fascination and yes..dedication to our avocation.

Honda SOHC 4's simply represent a hallmark brand and ride that is not only ubiquitous and well-known..but also ushered in an age of motorcycling that was not only more technologically advanced but civilized as well.   That is reason alone for my continued love of the line.

I love the style of these old Fours.  I've yet to see anything else as classic.  :)

I love the sounds, the character, the conversations, the looks, the shiney bits, the memories, the feeling etc etc of my old girl (and the bike  ::)), but I still hanker for a CB1300 and one of the new 400/4s - I can see them now sitting along side the 2 70's bikes in the garage - then I'd have the best of both worlds. ;D
But for now, give me the old CBs anyday - who couldn't be happy owning them?

I had the first US year monster (1994) back in the day I am still kicking myself in the butt for selling it to my buddy. It was blast to ride and turned heads everywhere.

I have owed everything from the 748S Ducati, to Yamaha R1's, R6's, Suzuki GXRS, to Honda 600 to 900rr's and a harley nighter 1200, and I have never received the recognition or applause as I have with my 74 750K the I had spent months on restoring. Take your cruiser or your jap "crotch rocket" any day, your plastic clad to your your chromed out behemoths...

They're a dime a dozen and you all know it..

Take it for what it's worth. The true love is in the original.. The classics.. The beloved's that were left to rust..

my 2 cents fellows.

Cafe Racing is mainly a matter of taste. It is an atavistic mentality, a peculiar mix of low style, high speed, pure dumbness, and overweening commitment to the Cafe Life and all its dangerous pleasures. The thing i like about these bikes  is the character they have, i like older cars for the same reason. New bikes and cars have no character, they are all clone mobiles as far as i am concerned.
These bikes are so versatile too, they look good stock or cafe`ed, wearing a half fairing or a full fairing, choppered or bobbered. They just have character and style, they ride nice even if they arent the fastest bikes on the road or the best under brakes but they are beautiful, there is nothing more to say.
Thank god for this forum, or i`d be no more than a plastic rider........
Cheers
