« on: May 08, 2008, 02:35:21 PM »
I had a brain fart and purchased this bike hoping to make it a project and turn it into a cafe racer forgeting I don't have the facility, tools, or knowledge to do it. I have seven bikes crammed into my half the garage so a couple bikes have to go including this 76F. Not sure what I'll do with it, maybe take the K compatible parts off and junk it or sell it for parts or persevere and and get it running then sell it hopefully for what I paid ($1,500)

All the parts are there, the bike just hasn't run in over ten years so the carbs need cleaning etc. I cleaned up the front caliper and at least I can roll it around now. Just thought I would show it here before putting it on Craig's list in case anyone on the forum needs parts or even wants the bike. Stock exhaust is good. Any ideas!! I still think it would make a nice cafe racer but my wife refuses to park outside.

Wow,  :o thats too nice looking to part out and junk it.  Does it have a title? If it's just in need of some minor work I'd love to have it.  Not sure I can do the $1500 you're looking for but I'll see...
I think you should fix it and ride it before you sell (then you'll never sell it)
Good luck!

Jevfro-I was more-or-less forced to buy it as part of a deal on my 75K. Everyone who has seen the bike thinks the K should have come along as part of the deal on the F.

The previous owner (who owns a dealership), who I know to be trustworthy has told me the bike ran great and that if I got it running I wouldn't sell it, same thing you're saying. The bike is registered though not insured. The bike looks better in the pictures than it actually is though.

As an aside, the 75K that I bought from him hadn't ran or been registered in 15 years, sitting in a museum for most of that time. I poured gas in the brand new tank, he put on a new tank and side covers before putting the bike in the museum, pressed the button and the bike started up immediately. I've been riding it nearly daily since, not even touching the carbs. Try that with a Brit bike!!

Thanks. I put the F on Craig'slist and had no real interest so I'm going to take the K compatible parts off and probably send the rest to the boneyard. My interest is in the Ks and I really don't have the room for her. Kind of strange no one was interested as I've seen these exhaust go on eBay for $4-500 alone and that tank must be worth something.

What exactly is wrong with the F bike? Where are you located exactly? The bike appears to be mint but if not then what issues does it have? Rusty tank? Leaky engine? Tires? Etc?

Cheers

The bike needs tires, a battery, carbs need cleaning although I took off a couple bowls and they look spotless so I assume the bike was properly stored. The bike looks better in pictures, the right sidecover is badly ripped. The tank is good with no rust and the engine turns over. I bought it at the same time I bought the K5 thinking I would make it into a cafe racer but when I got it home reality hit me, no space, tools, knowledge, or time. When  bought the K5 the seller pretty much said he wants the purchaser to take both bikes and in the excitement I did.

It'll be sad to see the f stripped and junked... I'd take it but it's just a bit more than I can afford right now.  Would you consider less than $1500?

It is your bike and you can do what you want, but it would be a crime to do that to the bike.  It appears you had the bike on Craig's list for only 3 days before deciding to part it out and junk it.  Give it a little more time so somebody can have the pleasure of what looks like could be a great bike.  I know, I have one just like it, except it is a '75, still going strong at over 110,000 miles.

How many miles on it?  Have you tried to start it?

I agree, I've put the bike in my driveway a few times with the intention of taking it apart, got the tools out but just couldn't do it. Believe me, I'm all for keeping the old bikes alive and as original as possible. I've had a lot of response to my Craig's list add but oddly enough it's nearly all from the US, I'm just not into shipping the bike or parts out of the country, just too much effort.

As I stated previously I more-or-less bought the bike under duress and planned to make it a cafe racer but the more I see it and learn about it I've grown to really like it. My lovely wife is very understanding in regards to my motorcycle habit but refuses to park outside leaving me my half of the garage to park seven bikes including a Ural Patrol which is a sidecar rig. It's cruel to park any bike outside especially half-dismantled so someting has to go, as this is my only non-running bike it's the  logical choice.

My rational for dismantling the bike was that if I can't sell it for what I paid I could get at least $1,500 in parts off the bike to help keep my two 750Ks running till I'm down and out, which at 67 probably won't be too long anyway!! I don't buy or sell bikes for monetary reasons but no one who has contacted me has said I'm asking too much. The two most serious contacts I've had both wanted a 750F to turn into a cafe racer but when I was unable to get back to them on the weekend due to helping my son move they both bought 750Fs for similar prices elsewhere. Both said if I had of got back to them sooner they would rather of bought mine.

Jevfro-I would be willing to take what you have now and the rest later, this only applies to you. If you see the bike and it's not as I've indicated or you can convince me it's worth less I would drop the price but I can give no guarantee as I've never had the bike running. Is it hard to get over the border for you? BTW it has 41,000 miles and the motor is not seized, the most common question I've had on CL.

Thanks everyone for reading these long post and for your comments. Wayne

Ofreen, sorry I didn't answer in my former post. 41,000 and no I haven't tried starting it, I've been tempted but the slides are sticky so I'd want to clean the carbs first. The tank looks very clean and I dropped a couple carb bowls and they were surprisingly clean and the floats free making me think at least the bike was properly stored. It was owned by the owner of a Honda dealership so it's not suprising. The other bike I bought from the same person the same day just needed a bit of gas and started straight away after sitting for 15 years, I still haven't touched the carbs or ignition. Regards.

Thanks, feliz.  I was tempted by it as I haven't had a bike project in awhile, but you are about a 1500 mile roundtrip from here.  Even in my old Toyota pickup, it would cost almost 300 bucks in gas to get there and back.

If it is all there, and the way you describe it, I'd bet it would run with a little prep.

Thanks for the offer feliz...  I have the same problem as ofreen.  I was day dreaming when I should have been doing the math.  I didn't realize Vancover, BC was quite so far away... ~500 miles round trip.  Getting over the boarder wouldn't be hard (I have a valid passport) but paying for the fuel to get there and back is scaring me.
My van only gets 10-12mpg on a good day  :-[ truck does worse ~8-10mpg :-[ :-[
would cost me at least $200 just in gas.   :-\
If I could find a cheap way to get there and back I could do it, but I don't think such a thing exists anymore.  It looks so good... maybe I could ride a bus there, get it running (don't know how, where, or with what tools/spares) and ride it home?  250 miles is a long and scary shakedown ride... hrmm, probably have to pass, damn. :-\ :-[

Sorry if I got your hopes up!  :-[

Fuel prices are killing me right now anyway, as they are everyone.  I drive ~50miles a day and we're paying ~$3.75 per gallon.  What are the gas prices like in BC?

That's what I was doing when I bought the bike....dreaming.

No Problem about getting my hopes up, I've become attached and don't really care if I sell her now. I would sell her to someone who really knows the bike and wants it. It's only because of the space issue I ever considered selling the bike. Surprisingly I get more responses to my add every day but have less interest in selling her. I might have to build a shed out back!!

I paid $1.37 for a litre today which works out to $6.22 CAN=$5.17 US gal.
