Cb750 K1 brought back to life...DONE!!!
« on: May 08, 2008, 06:54:49 PM »
After getting this bad boy to run it's time to strip it down. I thought this would take a lot longer than it did. But one full day of teardown and she's down to the wheels, motor, pegs, kick stand, and oil reservoir.

There's a few mid teardown closeups and an after shot...

Next is to take off the wheels and front end, then the motor. We're (me and my friend who got the bike for free from his uncle) going to have the frame painted fix/replace everything that needs it, and repaint the tank, put different exhaust on it, put everything back together, tune up the engine (valve clearance, timing, etc...) new handlebars and a few other things...

I'll keep everyone posted.

Yeah she sat outside a while...everything mechanical on this bike is in great shape though...Especially since it only has 12,000 some odd miles on it.

Good luck on the K1. I just finished my K1 resto up about a month ago. I still have to paint my extra set of bodywork though. If you need any help or info this is the only place you will need.

That is beautiful GNX! The K1 really was the prettiest of all the CB750's, I reckon!  ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I agree Terry. Really I do.

Keep working at it Cbass. Leinies is a good fuel. I'm about 40 miles north of the Brewery.

GNX Fan,

Looks great! I am in the process of refurbishing a 71 K1 also. Don't want to call it a resto as the original body work is in great shape as is most of the original components. Mine has 20K miles on it and it has sat for a long time (~ 14 years) so that is what necessitated my tear down. I am contemplating re-painting the frame right now.

Did you intentionally leave your caliper silver or did it come that way? Mine is black, as I thought all K1's were.

Phil

Good luck on the K1. I just finished my K1 resto up about a month ago. I still have to paint my extra set of bodywork though. If you need any help or info this is the only place you will need.

I just stripped off the satin black paint for now. I'll probably either repaint it original or powdercoat it when I do my dual disc conversion and do both calipers at once. Not sure yet. Thanks for the compliments everyone. My picture shows the original paint but I'm planning on trying to do the Don Dirtbiker kit on my extra bodywork and keep the originals. By the way, anybody here need some candy lime gold paint? I bought it for a CL350 project but sold the bike instead.

Well this bike won't be a restoration. I'm a 22 year old college student, and don't have the $$$ for a professional paint job of the original color. It would be $500 or more. The original tank has more little dents than I can count, and it only had one side cover, and the one i do have is cracked. The original HM300 exhaust top two pipes are rotted out on the end, and the one bottom one has a few little holes on the bottom, and the one good pipe has surface rust and couple dings. At $400 for decent used ones and over $1000 for NOS, I might just get after-market exhaust, and we're painting the tank and side covers, when i find some, an old school mat black (one of my friends has a paint sprayer setup, and we're going to use that, it won't be a rattle can paint job, we still want it to look nice) but keep the chrome trim and emblems on the tank, and emblems on the side covers. Unless I can find someone who will paint it the original color that won't cost me an arm and a leg. It didn't cost me that much to have my car door and fender painted, not sure why it would cost so much, and I didn't even ask to have the stripes painted either, just prime, paint candy red, and clearcoat.

Thanks for the encouragement.

Does anyone know what I should do about the oil tank when I remove it? I know I need to drain the oil from the tank, but what should I do to plug the holes where the oil lines go into the motor so I can keep oil in the motor when i take it out?

Thanks again...

If you have a spray set up you could use Don's paint. for the money you can not go wrong. I just had a guy spray a 175 that I am restoring and the color is spot on.

The bike is down to the frame and we're taking it and the swingarm to get sandblasted today. Then we're getting taking the small parts to my friends cousin's to use his sand blasting booth for the small parts...

I'll post some pics once the parts are painted and we start to put everything back together.

Everything came out great from sandblasting, had some pitting on the swingarm where a bunch of leaves and dirt had sat, but still really solid. No holes or cracks or rot on the frame or anything else.

Took everything over to my bosses garage, he has every tool imaginable including a blasting booth for the small parts. Did the battery box, tool tray, engine mounts, kick stand, rod for rear brake, the flat about a foot long part that goes from the swingarm to the rear brake thing lol not sure what it's called, key-switch holder...and some other misc. parts.

Already primed and has one coat of black enamel on everything. Will post pictures as soon as I can get over there with my camera...keep forgetting to bring it. I'll try to have some posted late tomorrow or early Saturday...starting to get excited about being able to put some parts back on the bike. We're going to have at the motor with some degreaser over the weekend and start polishing things up, put a few more coats of paint on everything next tues/wed/thurs, and start putting everything back on it the week after. Should start looking like a bike again in a few weeks. Hopefully road worthy in a month if money allows...

Needs a new front sprocket, chain, front brake rebuilt, new tires, bidding on some rebuilt forks right now, the steering stem bearings looked great to my amazement, all chrome should polish up okay, (not going for a show bike, just a daily rider...), need to fix the starter button, replace a few wires, clean the oil pump, replace the oil filter, have the carbs synchronized, get the motor timed just right, get the tank kreemed, paint the tank and side covers, replace the seat foam, adjust my valve clearance, adjust cam chain, new exhaust...the list goes on...

Motor is back in the frame, oil tank hooked up, centerstand on, triple tree/forks/front wheel on soon to be rolling again on Tuesday when I have the day off...I'll post some pics Tuesday.

The original exhaust is pretty bad, a couple pipes are salvageable. I'm going to post pics of them soon and see if anyone thinks they can use them before I chop the ends off and take out the baffles...

I do hope you shot the previous owner!
That poor bike it makes me weep.
You are doing a great job for the lack of funds and your age (not a crack at young uns but they usually don't appreciate the SOHC bikes and classic mechanics).
Keep going young man, we want to see the finished pictures too but up dates are good...........Hush.

Thought I'd post some new pics...

Still needs lots of cleaning and polishing, but just having the frame re-painted makes it look a lot better...still need to blast/paint the oil tank...BTW the rust doesn't stand out near as bad in person as my camera makes it look...

Oh, and we took the seat cover off and found two dead mice inside...the foam is junk because of them...(happened before we got it) There's new handlebars, and we'll be putting new rims on it (originals are a little rusty and the rear one is slightly bent/untrue). Ordered a chain and front sprocket today, got an oil filter finally, tried to polish the fenders, but even Mothers couldn't polish the chrome on these fenders back to their original luster. Seat pan was pretty rusty, had at it with a wire brush wheel but am going to blast it soon and have new foam put on it...

The bottom two mufflers have some surface rust and a couple tiny holes and are really dirty...the top two have big holes in the ends of the mufflers and some rust where the headers meet the mufflers (and the same surface rust and dirt)...

Are any of these worth anything? Should I chop the ends like I planned...or try to sell them to someone else for cheap? I know no one would want the top two (unless they were desperate and wanted to rechrome and patch them), but the bottom two are salvageable...I think. Let me know...

Just trying to show the condition thoroughly to see if anyone could use them before I take the baffles out and hack the ends off to use them temporarily till I have the funds to get new four into twos...

If they were 650 pipes I'd start swimming now!
"FREE PIPES FREE PIPES" any takers?
Typical, over supplied 750 owners don't even want free pipes! :o

I polished/cleaned the lower ones and got most the rust off and they look a lot better than I thought they would. The upper ones are still junk....we're just going to take out the baffles and cut the top two at the very ends...should look decent until we can afford some new ones...

What would be some good pipes that aren't too loud and that I could keep the center stand and not have to mess with jetting too much? I don't want four into one...4 - 2 would be nice...

What's the lower right one like Chris? Mine aren't rusty, but the bike they came off (not mine) must have been dropped hard, as it's badly dented. Cheers, Terry. ;D

I'm baaaacckkkk....got married, have a kiddo on the way and bought a house...dang...so yeah i've been a little busy lately. My wife's father is getting part of his truck fixed and repainted and will be getting the tank, sidecovers, and headlight bucket painted the same color for free! I know it's not a factory paint job, but it's still tasteful, and free. The dark Chevy blue from an 08 silverado...will post picks when that happens. Finally got a new seat and tank though...

Well...Almost 3 years after i started this bike...All I have left is to set the timing, rebuild the petcock, and get some original mirrors...I'll have to get some better pictures put up. This bike kind of got put on hold for a while, while i overhauled an 81 CX500c I had given to me...I already had a parts bike so i didn't have to put much money into that one. Rode that bike all last summer and it just doesn't do it for me. Thinking I might sell that one this year...

The list since last update of my 750 k1 ...

Aftermarket 4-2 slip-on mufflers with original headers.
put on the seat i got off ebay that's in decent shape
New handlebars, had to fish the wires through them...took forever
Soldered wires inside right hand switch to get the lights working right
Stainless allenhead bolt kit
Synchronized carbs with motion pro tool
adjusted valves finally today, and cam chain
fork seals and fluid
got the new tank lined and everything painted
replaced all cables
new chain and sprockets
new neutral switch o-ring
oil pan gasket
brake pedal off a 70's 750 hondamatic to clear the aftermarket exhaust
rebuilt front brake caliper
replaced rear rim with used, not bent rear rim, and new spokes for the rear laced and trued myself
new tires
battery
new plugs...again

tweaked air screws on carbs to get it to run and rev up nice and smooth had to take them out to 1 1/2. just a little more than with stock exhaust...didn't have to re-jet
ran so good after that the idle went up to 2,200 rpm and ended up having to turn the adjustment for slides on the carbs 1 turn because i had no more adjustment in the idle screw.

got original style gators on the forks and chrome headlight ears
got an aftermarket left side cover w/out emblems
had to replace original key switch (might have already mentioned that)
found #4 spark plug boot was junk and sparking to engine...(electrical tape fixed that for now)
replaced rubber boots between carbs and airbox with new OEM ones

found out to NOT keep dumping oil in the oil tank after the bike sits overnight and you think oil is magically disappearing, when it's really just draining into the motor. (started it and oil poured out the overflow)

And numerous other things i can't remember at the moment

Overall, this bike was a great learning experience and I can't WAIT til it gets warm out so I can ride this thing on the road for the first time...

Thanks for all the help, support and priceless information that I couldn't find ANYWHERE else...

Interesting write up there bass. You will get plenty of looks on that piece of history. Nice job on getting it ready to ride. Below are a couple pics of how my K1 sits this winter. Tins are in for paint and I am chompin' for the snow to melt here in WI. I take it your new wife likes bikes...hope so as these classics tend to make you want more... ;D

She likes to ride with me, and doesn't mind me working on them all the time. But I've been trying to find a bike she can comfortably ride/hold up. I might be getting a late 60's 305 scrambler...again for FREE!

And I know how it goes with getting one and having them multiply. I have four in my garage right now, and a Cushman scooter at my parents...

Mine doesn't look near as nice as yours but, I just didn't have the money to do 100%...

Either way, I can't wait to ride it, and if it weren't for me fixing it up it was headed to the local salvage...

When I went to get a title for it, it wasn't even in the system at the secretary of state office...lol. So it hasn't been on the road in a LOONNNNG time...
