vehicle registration, legal reqiremsents
« on: May 09, 2008, 07:21:06 AM »
my bike was purchased from a guy who got it from a motorcycle shop that was junking it.  It sat in thier back lot for some number of years collecting rust and loosing a few parts.  It sat in a field somewhere for years before that.  Last time registerd was over 22 years ago. (she's a 78 cb750).  So... she's off the DMV system in california complsetely.
How much trouble am I going to have when I try to get a pink and put her in my name (she was never 'dissmantled' or 'junked'.  And I'm close, maybe a month from being able to put her back on the road.  What will I need to to to get her back in the system.... should I claim her as mine from long long ago? or .... what???

From what I understand as I am in a similar situation now, is that all you have to do is go the the DMV and fill out the paperwork to put a title in your name, assuming the title is clear and not in someone elses name.  Then you have I believe around 60 days to bring it in for an inspection.  THen, it may take up to 45 days for them to assign a liscence plate for it.  I was told it would cost about $75 after fees (although I don't know if I believe them).

Well, since it's completely off the DMV list at this time.... in theory it is in no one elses name at all.  I also have heard they will want it brought in for the VIN inspection, and may check it out to see it's got all the required working equipment (lights, brakes, etc.) and not been modified to the point where it would need a more serious safety inspection.  Since I have the original liscence plate, I wonder if I should hand that in at the time, or will they let me keep the number and just give me a new sticker?  I assume I get a temporary reg so I can drive it over the hill (about 30 miles away) for the vin inspection.... and maybe to work and back a few times to break in the new tires??

You could try ITS titles in NV.  I know a guy who got good results here in Florida (and in Florida you are assumed a thief if you roll into DMV trying to get a title for anything)..

I second that Florida comment.   They did everything but call security when I asked about titling bikes bought with no title.

Make out a bill of sell (wink wink) and go to the DMV or Auto Club if you are a member. Instead of going to the Highway Patrol to check the VINs, have your local Police Department do it, they will come to your house and do the inspection. Cost is around $ 50.00 for the inspection, the regisratration should be around $ 75.00

ITS title has been a big help. You might contact them.

'78 CB750F Super Sport (just a reminder)

Registration DONE !!!!  I had a buddy that used to build race cars and had been though this hurdle more than once with a car.  Since the old reg expired in 1987 (according to the tag on the plate) he filled out a bill of sale, a certificate of Non-op (for the previous 20 years), and a statement of facts (saying it was stored in his barn and he had no paperwork from 20 years ago).  Then I applied for a title and reg (one short form) and gave all the paper work to my wife to take over while I toiled away at my day job.  I got home and happy day..... temp reg, temp plates, and I've got until September to get the VIN inspection done.

I'm on the road again!!!!! (legally too!!)

but, um... while I was waiting, I found this nice chrome rear fender from a 77 K model and I'm thinking of pulling off the rear grab bar, seat, storage bin, and plastic fender, then putting in the chrome job (drop in bolt on replacement) and adding a custom cafe seat instead of that funky super-sport thing with the plastic tail....  I've got 'western' generic bars (smaller than the stock Honda job) and I can flip them so they angle down instead of up and I'll have a poor man's cafe.... at least the start of one.  Seems to me that my project bike just keeps evolving... and evolving... and evolving...

Pics to follow in a separate subject post.
